We are seeking an Executive Director with a passion for international arts and cultures and intercultural interactions. The Executive Director serves as the chief executive officer of the museum, providing strategic leadership, operational oversight, and vision to advance the museum’s mission, programs, and community impact. The Executive Director oversees all aspects of the museum’s administration, including educational, financial, curatorial, and development functions. This position reports directly to the Board of Directors to develop and implement strategic goals that ensure the museum’s sustainability, relevance, and excellence in exhibitions, programs, and public service. Using exceptional leadership and communication skills, as well as mastery of grant writing and development protocols, this position shapes the goals and success of the Global Village Museum of Arts and Cultures and its mission.
Key Responsibilities
Provide visionary and strategic leadership to achieve the museum’s mission, goals, and objectives.
Develop and execute the museum’s long-range strategic plan in collaboration with the Board of Directors.
Cultivate a culture of inclusion, innovation, collaboration, and accountability among staff and volunteers.
Represent the museum as its public spokesperson and ambassador within the community and beyond.
Governance and Board Relations
Serve as the primary liaison to the Board of Directors, supporting effective governance and policy development.
Prepare and present reports, strategic updates, and recommendations to the Board.
Assist in board recruitment, orientation, and development to strengthen governance capacity.
Financial and Administrative Management
Oversee the preparation and management of the annual budget and ensure fiscal responsibility.
Monitor financial performance, ensuring compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and ethical standards.
Manage museum operations including facilities, human resources, technology, and security.
Ensure accurate financial reporting and stewardship of assets, including collections and property.
Fundraising and Development
Lead all fundraising and development activities, including donor cultivation, grant writing, sponsorships, and membership growth.
Build and maintain strong relationships with donors, foundations, corporate sponsors, and government agencies.
Develop and implement fundraising strategies to diversify and expand the museum’s revenue streams.
Community Engagement and Public Relations
Serve as the primary public representative and advocate for the museum within the community, region, and broader museum field.
Foster partnerships with educational institutions, cultural organizations, civic groups, and other stakeholders.
Oversee marketing, communications, and public relations efforts to enhance the museum’s visibility and reputation.
Champion diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion in all museum initiatives.
Human Resources and Organizational Development
Recruit, develop, and supervise a talented and diverse staff team.
Establish clear performance goals and professional development opportunities.
Promote an organizational culture that values respect, collaboration, creativity, and accountability.
Exhibitions, Programs and Collections
Support volunteers, museum staff and members in developing exhibitions and programs that engage diverse audiences.
Ensure that all exhibitions and programs align with the museum’s mission, scholarly standards, and community interests.
Promote innovation in programming, interpretive strategies, visitor engagement, and educational outreach.
Oversee the acquisition, preservation, interpretation, and exhibition of the museum’s collections.
Desirable Characteristics of the Successful Applicant
Management experience and understanding of the goals of a non-profit museum, and the ability to act on behalf of the Board of Directors.
Demonstrates strong written, listening, and interpersonal communication skills.
Flexibility and willingness to engage at multiple levels to keep the daily operations of the Museum running smoothly. We are a small operation!
Ability to create and maintain effective systems to accomplish Board goals with consistency.
Budgeting and spreadsheet experience.
Be able to accommodate a flexible schedule, including Saturdays. There may be some evenings and special events.
Show proficiency in computer skills, including Google Workspace.
Fundraising and grant-writing experience is required.
Other Job Information
The executive director position reports to the GVM Board of Directors.
A bachelor’s or master’s degree in a relevant field, such as public history, museum studies, public relations, etc., is desirable.
This position is 35 hours per week, with no benefits and a hiring range of $20- $25 per hour. The work schedule is determined by the needs, objectives, and deadlines that are presented at any given time, with Saturdays and some evenings expected. The Museum is closed on Sunday and Monday.
All applicants must be able and qualified to begin work by November 18, 2025.
