Job Summary
Employment Duration:
3 months with potential to extend. The Clinical Social Worker II/III is responsible for providing psychosocial assessment, crisis intervention, counseling, brief therapeutic interventions, education, community referrals, and support services. The Social Worker works closely with the interdisciplinary team to facilitate patient care, especially for high-risk populations, and supports safe and timely discharge planning or ongoing care coordination.
The CSW II/III participates in program development, quality improvement, and department education activities. The CSW III level includes advanced clinical responsibilities such as program planning, supervision, and consultation. This role requires sensitivity and cultural competence to provide services to patients and families of all backgrounds.
Key Responsibilities
Provide psychosocial assessments, crisis intervention, counseling, and referrals.
Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to create and implement patient care plans.
Address adjustment to illness and psychosocial needs of patients and families.
Participate in discharge or continued care planning.
Identify and report suspected abuse or safety concerns following legal and UCSF policies.
Screen for and manage behavioral health concerns, including suicidal/homicidal ideation.
Provide guidance on legal/ethical issues such as decision-making capacity and Advance Health Care Directives.
Maintain accurate and timely medical record documentation.
Facilitate and participate in patient, family, and interdisciplinary meetings.
Engage in department/hospital in-services and contribute to education initiatives.
Participate in quality improvement activities and program planning.
Provide clinical supervision for staff (CSW III only).
Provide coverage and support to other teams as assigned.
Comply with UCSF policies and procedures.
Required Qualifications
Master’s degree from a CSWE-accredited School of Social Work.
Experience (internship or career) in healthcare, mental health, and/or child protection settings involving children and families.
Experience with crisis de-escalation and trauma-informed care.
Strong written and verbal communication, organizational, and analytical skills.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a high-volume environment.
Proficient in phone, text/pager, internet, and electronic documentation systems.
Flexibility to work across UCSF Medical Center locations.
Preferred Qualifications
Current California State License as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) (required for CSW III).
Experience working with pediatric patients.
Fluency in a second language, especially Spanish.
Epic experience strongly preferred.
