The Chemical Hygiene Safety Officer (CHSO) provides part-time support for safe chemical management and laboratory practices across the district's secondary schools. Working in collaboration with the Director of Science, the CHSO helps implement the district's Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP), conducts regular safety inspections, manages the hazardous waste program, and serves as a resource for science educators. The CHSO ensures ongoing compliance with applicable safety regulations and promotes a culture of safety through training, communication, and documentation.
Key Responsibilities
Assist in maintaining and reviewing the district's Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP) in alignment with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1450.
Assist in enforcing CHP rules and recommending updates to improve safety protocols.
Seek ways to improve the CHP and overall chemical safety programs.
Deliver lab safety and hazardous waste training for science staff.
Serve as a resource to staff for safe chemical storage, handling, and PPE practices.
Participate in quarterly department meetings to review safety updates and staff needs.
Conduct monthly inspections/audits of lab spaces, prep rooms, and chemical storage areas.
Summarize inspection findings and recommendations in written reports.
Participate in lab accident reviews and maintain spill records.
Manage the district's hazardous waste program in collaboration with the Science Director and Facilities.
Coordinate proper labeling, storage, and removal of hazardous waste materials.
Maintain and update the district's hazardous materials chemical inventory.
Review and maintain Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) for all hazardous chemicals.
Advise and counsel staff on best practices for chemical storage, handling, and disposal.
Attend quarterly environmental safety meetings to stay informed on regulatory updates and district-wide efforts.
Assist in producing an environmental health and safety newsletter to support ongoing staff awareness.
Contribute to the development and content of a district science safety webpage.
Qualifications Required
Minimum of one semester of collegiate-level coursework and hands‑on experience in a laboratory science or related field (e.g., chemistry, biology, environmental science, or industrial hygiene).
A minimum of 3 years of experience working with chemical safety or lab safety protocols within the last 6 years.
Preferred
Bachelor's degree in a related science or environmental field.
Prior experience managing chemical inventories or hazardous waste in educational or laboratory settings.
Completion of one of the following, or willingness to complete within 3 months of hire:
Laboratory Safety Institute (LSI) “How to Be a More Effective Chemical Hygiene Officer” training
Certification through the National Registry of Certified Chemists (NRCC)
Stipend and Time Commitment
This is a stipend-based, part-time position.
Expected time commitment: Approx. 1 day per week or 2-4 days per month.
Schedule will be coordinated with the Director of Science, based on school calendar and safety needs.
Ideal Candidate Will Possess
Strong working knowledge of OSHA’s Laboratory Standard, GHS labeling, and laboratory safety practices.
Ability to communicate clearly with educators and administrators about risk mitigation and safety practices.
Meticulous attention to documentation, record‑keeping, and compliance.
Proactive mindset with strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
