Position Summary This position functions as a Network Administrator supporting the Electronics‑Specialty Shop and Access Control Shop. Responsibilities include maintaining the Central Alarm Receiving System (CARS) and related databases, providing programming and application support, recommending upgrades, updating user accounts, and performing network system administration on Life Safety servers. The role also involves troubleshooting hardware and software issues, training end‑users, managing vendors, ensuring database security, and performing hardware support including servers and peripheral equipment. Additional duties include managing network IP structure, database administration for Microsoft SOL and Access, maintaining Fire Panel Online Monitoring (FPOM), overseeing a New Radio Mesh Network System, and assisting in office management tasks such as purchasing and record‑keeping.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate’s degree in Computer Information Technology, Computer Technology Integration, Networking Technology, or related area and one year of experience in the information technology field related to the position’s role;

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and one year experience in the information technology field related to the position’s role;

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, math, engineering, or a related technical degree from an accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Journey level requires an additional one year of experience.

Advanced level requires an additional two years of experience.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Ability to identify issues causing an account NSR (Non‑Receipt of Signal) and communicate solutions to technicians.

Effective communication with customers, contractors, project managers, IT personnel, and field technicians.

Read and comprehend mechanical, electrical, and building blueprints related to alarm networks.

Proficiency with Microsoft computing systems and Microsoft Office software.

Understanding industry terminology for clear communication.

Ability to serve as a mandatory employee during essential operations, including adverse weather or emergency conditions.

Individuals not holding NICET Level II Certification for Fire Alarm Systems must obtain certification within four (4) years.

Valid NC Driver’s License or ability to obtain one before the start date.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience

Recent experience in the Fire Alarm industry with factory certification from at least two major fire alarm manufacturers.

Experience reviewing building design phases for life‑safety systems and conducting system operational testing, inspections, and commissioning.

Experience working with state agencies such as NCDOI, NCDOL, and NC SCO.

Ability to prioritize, schedule, assign, and manage workload, including service orders, preventive maintenance programs, emergency requests, and backlog.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

Current knowledge of digital communication systems and university purchasing procedures.

NICET Level I Certification for Fire Alarm Systems.

Special Physical/Mental Requirements Work with hands and arms overhead, hands and knees, crawling under floors, moving heavy objects weighing up to 50 lbs, climbing ladders and scaffolding, working in confined spaces, standing for extended periods, and walking significant distances daily.

Position/Schedule Requirements Evening work occasionally, exposure to hazardous materials, night work occasionally, on‑call occasionally, overtime occasionally, valid NC Driver’s License, weekend work occasionally.
