Postdoctoral Appointee – Electrocatalysis (Center for Nanoscale Materials)
Join us at Argonne National Laboratory to lead efforts in materials synthesis, in situ/operando characterization, and catalytic performance evaluation at the Center for Nanoscale Materials. This role offers a unique opportunity to leverage CNM’s advanced characterization capabilities, contribute to high‑impact publications, and collaborate with scientists across CNM, Argonne, and external partners.
Key Responsibilities
Design, synthesize, and rigorously evaluate well‑defined electrocatalyst materials
Plan and execute in situ/operando studies using advanced techniques such as X‑ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS), X‑ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, Differential Electrochemical Mass Spectrometry (DEMS), and complementary methods
Perform electrochemical testing and benchmarking; analyze and interpret complex datasets to elucidate catalytic mechanisms and structure–property relationships
Document results and lead the preparation of high‑impact publications; present findings at internal meetings and external conferences
Collaborate within a multidisciplinary environment that includes experimentalists, modelers, and data scientists
Position Requirements
Recent or soon‑to‑be‑completed PhD (within the last 0‑5 years) in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related field
Demonstrated expertise in electrocatalysis, including catalyst synthesis, electrochemical characterization, and mechanistic analysis
Hands‑on experience with in situ/operando spectroscopy and/or advanced characterization (e.g., XAS, XPS, Raman, DEMS)
Proficiency in data analysis; familiarity with modeling or data science tools is a plus
Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team
Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork
Application Materials
Curriculum vitae (CV)
Cover letter describing research experience and fit for the role
Contact information for three references
As an equal employment opportunity employer, and in accordance with our core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork, Argonne National Laboratory is committed to a safe and welcoming workplace that fosters collaborative scientific discovery and innovation.
