What You Will Do

The position will be filled at either the Industrial Hygiene & Safety Professional 2 or the Industrial Hygiene & Safety Professional 3 level, depending on the candidate’s skills.

Support LANL programs and projects through the LANL Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Division.

Develop, recommend, and implement programs and procedures related to the recognition, measurement, evaluation, and control of potential health and safety hazards.

Provide daily industrial hygiene and safety support to programmatic and facility organizations to ensure worker protection, compliance with Laboratory S&H requirements, and mission success.

Resolve complex ESH problems creatively and collaboratively.

Promote safety, security, and quality in all operations; practice prudent fiscal and property management; promote teamwork; foster a positive work environment; and deliver exceptional customer service.

For IH&S Professional 3: Use professional industrial hygiene concepts to resolve complex analysis of work activities and data.

Work 24/7 coverage, including night shift and/or weekend schedule.

Minimum Job Requirements

Working knowledge, and demonstrated application, of DOE and regulatory requirements related to industrial hygiene and safety in a research environment.

Working knowledge of and experience implementing industrial hygiene/safety-related risk assessments and corrective actions.

Working knowledge and application of techniques and procedures for industrial hygiene exposure assessment (both qualitative and quantitative), including sampling, instrumentation, sample analysis, and selection/implementation of controls.

Working skill in preparing and communicating industrial hygiene/safety technical information to technical and non-technical personnel.

Working knowledge and ability to apply the hierarchy of controls to eliminate or mitigate hazards while ensuring mission success.

Working experience and skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions to industrial hygiene and safety related problems.

Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively within a team environment and provide excellent customer service.

Ability to obtain a Q clearance.

Additional Requirements for Higher Level Title

Education/Experience

Position requires a Bachelor’s in Science, Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or Safety, and five years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Higher level requires a Bachelor’s in Science, Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or Safety, and eight years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications

Broad knowledge of Laboratory organizations, operations, and activities.

Experience with Laboratory ESH data collection tools and databases.

Expert level knowledge in air monitoring and contamination control.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Active Q clearance.

A relevant professional certification preferred (eg. CSP, CIH).

Essential Job Functions

Depth perception, binocular vision, reading vision, ability to speak, ability to discriminate speech, ability to hear in a normal range (500 to 3000 hz), standing, walking, use stairs, fixed ladders and ladders up to six feet, ability to lift 50 pounds and carry 35 pounds.

Work Environment Ability to wear respiratory/protective equipment.

Work Location Onsite at Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Work Schedule 24/7 coverage, which will involve working a night shift and/or weekend schedule. Employees may be eligible for shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager.

Position Commitment Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Human Reliability Program & New‑Employment Drug Test

Subject to DOE Human Reliability Program: ongoing drug and alcohol testing and periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

Successful applicants must complete a new-employment drug test and comply with the Laboratory’s substance abuse policy, including random testing.
