Job Summary A Specialty Interpreter facilitates communication of spoken or signed messages between LEP patients and visitors and Lexington Medical Center staff and providers. The interpreter combines language skills with cultural mediation to support medical procedures, treatment discussions, discharge instructions, patient education, and follow‑up care.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or Equivalent
1 year of experience as a medical interpreter
No substitute education or experience
Nationally certified at the time of hire or obtain certification within the first year (CCHI for languages of limited diffusion or RID for American Sign Language)
Advanced language skills in at least two languages (e.g., English and American Sign Language)
Experience interpreting in medical settings
Knowledge of ethical and professional codes of conduct covering confidentiality, informed consent, and privacy (RID or NCIHC)
Specific proficiency testing and training as required by the relevant certifying body
Essential Functions
Provides interpretation services accurately, using appropriate medical, business, and general terminology.
Adheres to the National Council on Interpreting in Healthcare (NCIHC) or Register of Interpreters of the Deaf (RID) ethical guidelines and standards of practice.
Translates pertinent materials for patients and families when needed.
Acts as a cultural mediator to enhance communication between staff and patients or family members.
Duties & Responsibilities
Monitors language and interpreting skills, seeks continual improvement, and stays aware of linguistic variations.
Participates in continuing education to maintain certification.
Manages requests through ServiceHub.
Handles high‑pressure or emotionally intense situations with cultural sensitivity.
Travels to other LMC facilities as required.
Performs all other duties as assigned.
