The

Senior Custodian

performs skilled and responsible manual work in the cleaning, maintenance, and general care of town buildings and surrounding grounds. The role includes ensuring a safe, clean, and orderly environment and performing related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: HS Diploma/GED; Authorization to work in the US; Must have 3 or more years of experience in a custodial/janitorial position; Reliable transportation; Ability to fluently speak, read, and write in English; Ability to respond to emergencies off shift; Ability to use technology (computer, cell phone); Knowledge of the use of tools, techniques, equipment, and procedures required in the care of municipal school buildings; Ability to plan and prioritize work, be self-motivated, and perform multiple tasks promptly; Ability to access the internet to obtain information in support of the department operations; Ability to lift 75 pounds; Ability to walk and stand for long periods; Ability to work effectively with teachers and support staff; Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills, and the ability to work with all stakeholders; Ability to lead and give direction to junior-level custodians RESPONSIBILITIES:

Sevior Custodians are responsible for:

Opening and closing of the school and associated buildings, including but not limited to unlocking/locking doors, turning off/on alarms, raising and lowering flags; operating required lighting, conducting opening walkthroughs, ensuring building safety and functionality before student occupancy, ensuring the security of buildings, and closing and locking windows and doors; Daily policing and monitoring school grounds to address litter, as well as noting/reporting safety issues, concerns, and maintenance needs, paying special attention to dumpster areas, playgrounds, building entrances and exits; Cleaning and monitoring the bathrooms throughout the day to ensure health and safety standards are met; following Universal Precautions and sanitation procedures when handling the cleanup of bodily fluid spills. Unclog plumbing and waste traps (toilets, urinals, and sinks) as needed; Leading custodians in the removal of snow and ice by operating snow blowers, shovels, and spreaders for the clearing of walkways and stairs to maintain safe entry into buildings; Employees may be required to report to work before, during, and after serious inclement weather. Maintaining communications with Junior Custodians and submitting SBM work orders on behalf of Custodians and building administration; Assigning building-based work orders and assignments to Junior Custodians, including cleaning area assignment, minor repairs, and special assignments; Monitoring Junior Custodian's work for completion and quality. Mentors Junior Custodians where needed, including building-based training on custodial equipment and cleaning products; Ensuring building-wide cleaning operations are carried out; Ensuring SBM Facilities Managers are aware of all non-functioning equipment; Placing orders for custodial supplies; Maintaining communications with building-based administration in the area of building safety and operations; Moving furniture, setting up and breaking down for games, meetings, and special events; Monitoring the building's mechanical and safety systems and reporting any unusual conditions; Performing daily checks of all mechanical spaces, sprinkler control rooms, and boiler rooms; Taking immediate reasonable action (if safe to do so) to control and limit damage by fire or flood; Replacing classroom air filters as directed; Replacing needed lightbulbs, remove and replace non-asbestos ceiling tiles; Having a working knowledge of AHERA reports when carrying out duties throughout the building; Attending and completing department-required training; May be required to operate lawnmowers, string trimmers, and hedge trimmers to maintain the building's appearance; Responding to security and fire alarm calls, including off-shift hours; Carries a radio while on duty for communication within the building; Communicating and meeting regularly with the building-based administrator to set and update building goals in the areas of responsibility;

This series includes positions that provide, supervise, or administer the custodial staff and minor maintenance functions for schools and other municipal public buildings and their appurtenances (grounds, walks, lawns, and shrubbery). Primary duties are cleaning, housekeeping, and operation and maintenance of low-pressure heating, lighting, and ventilating systems. Maintenance duties are semiskilled and do not require journeyman trade or craft knowledge. Also included are positions that are responsible for maintaining order and safeguarding occupants in addition to the custodial and housekeeping duties when the latter are primary.

The aforementioned job title is authorized for use in the Building Maintenance Series. The title definitions include illustrative duties and are not all-inclusive.

As negotiated by the Fitchburg School Committee and the Fitchburg Education Association (FEA).

HOURS: 6am - 2pm
