Job Description and Duties

Under general supervision of a Legal Support Supervisor I or Staff Services Manager I, the Legal Secretary provides secretarial support in a fast‑paced legal office that serves attorneys handling litigation and house counsel matters across multiple specialties. The position typically supports three to five attorneys, assists other professional staff, and may take on backup or overflow assignments. The role requires strong communication skills, the ability to work well under pressure, meet tight deadlines, and work effectively within a team. Physical demands include prolonged sitting to operate computers, transcribing dictation, standing to photocopy, and assembling documents. A valid typing certification of 45 WPM is required.

Special Requirements

  • A current typing certificate (issued within the past four years) verifying a minimum speed of 45 WPM.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license if operating a state‑owned or leased vehicle.
  • Submit the Standard State Application (STD 678).

The position requires the ability to type at the minimum speed per the class specifications. Acceptable typing tests are available through CalCareers and the One‑Stop Career Centers.

Eligibility for Hire

Eligibility may be determined by your score on the Legal Secretary exam. New state civil service candidates must be on the state examination list.
