DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Performs entry‑level engineering tasks under close supervision of professional engineers in the planning, design, and construction of civil engineering projects.
Provides engineering assistance in identifying, managing, and rehabilitating various facilities and systems.
Conducts, reviews, inspects, and analyzes field and project studies to ensure compliance with plans, contracts, regulations, etc.
Develops, evaluates and/or designs new layouts, drawings, plans, specifications, etc.
Performs and reviews several types of engineering calculations to develop statistical data.
Assists in preparing project schedules and estimates of construction capital cost and construction time.
Prepares documents required for low interest loan programs to finance facilities.
Participates in and provides technical advice in the bid process.
Researches, analyzes, and prepares various records, reports, alternative solutions, and other data. Documents projects to ensure quality of commitment.
Performs jar test and other water quality test.
Maintains, monitors, and applies operating procedures to enhance functioning of facilities and systems.
Investigates and responds to inquiries by other City of Houston departments, consultants, agencies, contractors, and the public.
May perform other duties as assigned.
This is a Houston Public Works Engineering Emergency Management position at the Tier I Level.
WORKING CONDITIONS The position is physically comfortable: the individual has some discretion about walking, standing, bending, lifting, etc.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering that is approved by the State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers with a satisfactory standing.
OR requires graduation from an engineering or related science curriculum at a recognized institution of higher education, other than a curriculum approved by the Board and passage of the eight‑hour fundamentals of engineering examination prescribed by the Board.
OR possession of a valid Engineering‑in‑Training Certificate issued by the Board under the current requirements of the Texas Engineering Practice Act.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS No experience required.
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS None.
PREFERENCES
Knowledge and experience in surface water treatment processes.
Valid Texas Driver License and compliance with the City of Houston’s policy on driving (AP 2-2).
Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for.
SELECTION/SKILLS TESTS REQUIRED None. However, the department may administer a skills assessment test.
SAFETY IMPACT POSITION Yes. This position is subject to random drug testing and, if a promotional position, the candidate must pass an assignment drug test.
SALARY INFORMATION Pay grade 22.
