The City of Mountlake Terrace is hiring a Police Officer (Lateral). Eligible applicants must have worked as a paid full‑time law‑enforcement officer for at least 24 of the last 36 months and be CJTC‑certified or pass the State Equivalency Academy.
OVERVIEW The position involves general police work: prevention, detection and investigation of crimes, enforcement of law and order, and support of community safety. The officer reports directly to a Sergeant.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Equal and impartial enforcement of all state and local laws.
Provide service to protect lives, property and constitutional rights.
Secure information and maintain records of all activities.
Respond to crimes, accidents and emergencies, preserving evidence.
Conduct preliminary investigations and report to detectives as needed.
Use radio communication and maintain timely response to calls.
Provide first aid, rescue services and emergency medical assistance.
Engage in traffic direction, crowd control and public safety activities.
Promote police image through presentations and community outreach.
Evaluate officer performance and complete necessary report forms.
Participate in training, continuing education and operational improvement.
QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or GED.
Graduation from a Basic Law Enforcement Academy equal to the Washington State CJTC Academy.
Certified by CJTC or equivalent.
Minimum six (6) months experience as a police officer in another jurisdiction.
Valid Washington State driver’s license.
Complete background investigation, drug test and physical fitness exam.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Free of felony or domestic violence convictions.
Maintain certification as a Washington State Peace Officer.
Pass psychological examination, polygraph, physical exam, credit check and background check.
Ongoing education in law‑enforcement procedures and use of weapons and defensive tactics.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Work conducted Indoors and outdoors in all weather. Duties include walking, running, lifting up to 50 lbs, operating radios and motor vehicles, and responding to emergencies. Physical fitness, agility and endurance are required.
