About The Role As an Electro‑Mechanical Engineer at HII Newport News Shipbuilding, you will play a critical role in the design, development, integration, and maintenance of complex mechanical and electrical systems that power the U.S. Navy’s fleet. This position supports all stages of ship design and construction—from concept development through testing and delivery.
Key Responsibilities
Design, develop, and integrate electro‑mechanical systems including propulsion, power generation, automation, and control systems.
Develop system and subsystem requirements, specifications, and interface control documents.
Support system modeling, simulation, and analysis to ensure design performance meets program requirements.
Perform calculations, design reviews, and engineering analyses for mechanical and electrical components.
Prepare technical documentation, schematics, and engineering drawings in accordance with military and shipyard standards.
Collaborate with cross‑functional engineering teams (mechanical, electrical, controls, and structural) to ensure seamless integration of systems.
Troubleshoot, test, and validate system functionality during assembly, installation, and ship trials.
Provide technical support to production, operations, and test teams throughout construction and commissioning phases.
Ensure compliance with safety, quality, and environmental standards.
Qualifications Must Have
Bachelor’s Degree in engineering from an ABET‑accredited program with 9 years of relevant exempt experience, or
Master’s Degree with 7 years of relevant professional experience, or
Ph.D. with 4 years of experience.
Nice to Have
Interest in both mechanical and electrical aspects of control systems.
Understanding of mechanical and electrical principles, system integration, and control systems.
Knowledge of CAD tools and electrical design software.
Ability to read and develop mechanical and electrical schematics and technical drawings.
DOD security clearance preferred but not required to start.
