Qualifications
~2-10 years experience in Traffic Engineering Design in California
Experience preparing Traffic Control Plans, Signing/Striping Plans, and Traffic Signal Plans
Regulations and Design Standards experience including a mix of California Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (CA MUTCD), California Department of Transportation (CALTRANS) Standard Plans / HDM, AASHTO Green Book, Local/Regional standards, City requirements, and California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) requirements
Design Tools including a mix of: AutoCAD, MicrosStation, AutoTURN, ParkCAD, etc.
Bachelor’s Degree in Transportation, Urban Planning, Civil Engineering, or similar
Professional Civil Engineer (PE) in the State of California in good standing - strongly preferred
Additional Certifications including: Professional Traffic Engineer (TE), Road Safety Professional (RSP), Professional Traffic Operations Engineers (PTOE), IMSA Certifications (Traffic Control, Traffic Signals, Signs and Markings, etc.)

Responsibilities The Traffic Engineering Designer supports the planning, design, and production of traffic engineering projects. This role focuses on preparing high-quality design drawings, calculations, and documentation for transportation infrastructure and traffic control systems, ensuring compliance with agency standards and industry best practices.
Design & Drafting
Prepare Traffic Control Plans, Signing/Striping Plans, and Traffic Signal Plans in accordance with the current California Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (CA MUTCD), California Department of Transportation (CALTRANS) Standard Plans, Local/Regional standards, and City requirements, where applicable. Responsible for both design and drafting tasks. Mentors designers and technicians, delegates drafting as needed, and provides design-level direction for production staff.
Utilize the AutoCAD/MicroStation and associated software to produce accurate and precise drawings. Maintains and updates company design libraries, blocks, and templates, ensuring compliance with internal standards and compatibility with project team files. Establishes and enforces CAD best practices, QA/QC workflows, and sheet set organization.
Conduct field reviews of existing roadways, traffic control equipment, and pedestrian/bicycle/transit facilities. If required, prepare As-Builts plans.
Review truck/vehicle turning templates utilizing the AutoTURN software.
Review and design parking layouts utilizing the ParkCAD software.
Review Roadway Standards and prepare Design Exceptions, where appropriate.
Prepare Sight Distance reviews and Speed Surveys.
Assist in the design and implementation of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), including Adaptive Traffic Signal Control (ATSC), signal interconnect (fiber optic, copper, and wireless communications), etc.
Support conceptual design efforts related to roundabout layouts, bicycle/pedestrian facilities, traffic calming improvements, and roadway safety enhancements.
Provide municipal support through staff augmentation, plan check reviews, etc.
Quality & Standards
Ensure all design deliverables comply with applicable federal, state, and local standards (MUTCD, Caltrans HDM, AASHTO Green Book, etc.).
Conduct plan reviews, redlines, and QA/QC coordination with project engineers.
Maintain accurate project documentation, drawings, and revision control.
Project Support
Coordinate with project managers and engineers to develop design concepts and alternatives.
Attend internal project meetings and support communication with clients and subconsultants.
Contribute to cost estimating, material quantities, and project scheduling for design packages.
Collaborate with civil engineers, architects, and other professionals to ensure C2 projects meet approval agency requirements. Where applicable, utilize the Bluebeam Revu software to coordinate project comments with the project team.
Managing direct client interaction and communication with members of the public through community engagement.
Marketing and business development by nurturing client relationships, providing technical excellence, and supporting the preparation of proposals.
Mentor and train your colleagues and provide mentorship to junior staff.
Participate in ongoing training and professional development toward additional licensure or certification.
Continue developing knowledge about emerging technologies and trends in Transportation Planning and Traffic Engineering.
