About the Role, Your Impact We are hiring an Urban Planner to join the planning team at our Katy, TX or Bannockburn, Chicago, Crystal Lake, or Naperville, IL offices. The Urban Planner will perform general and specialized professional planning functions, including:
Developing implementable comprehensive plans, existing and future land use maps, zoning maps, unified development codes, and special area plans (neighborhood, downtown master, cultural, and parks/open‑space plans).
Assisting in creating and implementing master thoroughfare plans, capital improvement programs, and active transportation plans.
Facilitating public engagement efforts and providing technical expertise in analyzing data and supporting municipal clients.
Proactively pursuing AICP and Envision Sustainability Professional (ENV SP) credentials.
Transferring knowledge and training junior staff in technical writing and use of software such as Adobe Creative Suite and ArcGIS.
What Your Day-to-Day Will Look Like
Delegate project tasks and support staff responsibilities.
Assist in developing Planning Department graphic standards and product templates.
Develop a working knowledge and application of ArcGIS Urban software.
Provide QA/QC reviews of deliverables produced by others.
Assist with business‑development activities, including setting up meetings, preparing statements of qualifications (SOQs), and proposals.
Support various planning studies; analyze data and prepare reports for short‑term and long‑range projects.
Research and revise municipal regulatory codes and ordinances.
Facilitate public engagement activities and produce engagement materials.
Communicate complex planning concepts through graphics and renderings.
Make presentations to clients, public officials, and the general public; perform on‑call staff planner functions for local municipalities.
Coordinate with colleagues on stormwater management, grading, utilities infrastructure, transportation, and other civil engineering issues.
Review permit applications for compliance with comprehensive plans, thoroughfare plans, codes, ordinances, and other land‑development regulations.
Advance the planning profession by presenting at conferences and engaging in professional organizations (e.g., Texas APA).
Education Requirement
Bachelor's degree in urban planning, landscape architecture, urban design, or a related professional field.
Must‑Haves, What You Will Bring
4+ years of experience in urban planning, transportation planning, parks, recreation, open space, or comprehensive planning projects.
Leadership knowledge in community, urban, and regional planning covering transportation, parks, land use, energy, sustainability, and resiliency.
Expertise in special area planning for districts, neighborhoods, and corridors (plus).
Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator), Adobe Acrobat Pro, Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Excel, Teams, OneNote), and GIS software.
Excellent technical writing, graphic, and verbal communication skills.
Ability to analyze demographic data and identify employment, health, and other trends.
Experience working with local government staff and officials to interpret land‑development codes.
Working knowledge of effective public engagement strategies.
Ability to explain technical issues to non‑technical staff, officials, and the public.
Collaborative approach with developers, designers, and public officials.
Knowledge of urban spatial structure and municipal system operations, including utilities, stormwater management, water distribution, and wastewater systems.
Ability to envision alternative physical and social living environments.
Willingness to travel within the Houston metropolitan area (own transportation).
Compensation Pay range: $75,000–$95,000, based on skill set, experience, and certifications.
