Under the supervision of the Chief Psychologist, the Recreation Therapist provides specialized programs and services for inmates, which promote social interaction, encourage productive use of leisure time, and support preparation or re-entry to the general population or parole. The Recreation Therapist collaborates with Interdisciplinary Treatment Teams (IDTT), Primary Clinicians, Nursing staff, Mental Health staff, and Custody personnel to develop and implement recreational activities geared to clinical improvement in inmates’ functioning. Minimum Qualifications
Recreation Therapist, Correctional Facility (9286) – CalHR. Note: A Training and Development (T&D) assignment will not be considered at this time. Additional information about the job is available in the Duty Statement. Responsibilities (Selected)
Provide specialized recreation therapy programs and services to inmates to promote social interaction and constructive use of leisure time. Coordinate with IDTT, Primary Clinicians, Nursing and Mental Health staff, and custody personnel to develop and implement activities aligned with clinical objectives. Support preparation and re-entry of inmates into the general population or parole as part of rehabilitative goals. Monitor and document program outcomes and adjust activities to meet treatment plans. Compensation and Benefits Information
This position includes eligibility for various compensation adjustments, stipends, and recruitment/retention incentives as described in the posting. Specific pay adjustments and eligibility depend on bargaining unit, attendance, and service requirements. The posting notes: A $10,000 one-time recruitment and retention stipend may be available if eligibility criteria are met, plus up to $5,000 in monthly recruitment/retention differential during the first year. A $5,000 referral bonus may be available for CDCR/CCHCS employees who are selected and remain employed for 90 days, with a pre-employment questionnaire. Note:
Salaries do not reflect recent changes from PLP 2025. Part-time employees are paid on a prorated basis according to time base. Some pay differentials apply to employees stationed within the Psychiatric Inpatient Program. Additional Information
Effective July 1, 2025, PLP 2025 requires base salary adjustments and leave credits through June 2027 for applicable employees. Pay differentials and HAM (Hiring-Above-Minimum) authorization may apply; the HAM rate is listed in the posting. Only employees providing direct patient care (in-person, on grounds or at a facility for more than 50% of the pay period) are eligible for certain differential pay.
