Job Overview Under the general supervision of a pharmacist, this role performs pharmacy-related functions in compliance with department policies and procedures to provide optimal pharmaceutical care. Responsibilities include preparing and distributing pharmaceuticals, inventory control, compliance audits, financial transactions, customer service, and maintaining pharmacy records. The role also assists with ordering, receiving, and inspecting medication and supplies.

Job Description Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent.

Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT).

Massachusetts Pharmacy Technician Registration.

One (1) year of pharmacy-related experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Associate’s degree.

Two (2) years of pharmacy-related experience in a hospital setting.

Duties and Responsibilities The duties and responsibilities listed below describe the general nature of work and are not intended to be all-inclusive. Other duties may be assigned:

Participates in non-complex sterile and non-sterile medication preparation activities, including preparation of oral liquids and extemporaneous dosage formulations following master formulary sheets or labels; prepares sterile compounds following instructions.

Operates advanced, automated technology to assist in preparation and documentation of sterile products.

Picks medications for automated dispensing cabinet replenishment accurately and efficiently.

Completes inventory management activities, properly securing and storing all required records.

Fills floor stock remote orders (e.g., Operating Room, Emergency Room) accurately as determined by pharmacist check.

Maintains storeroom areas, orders supplies in short supply, and removes outdated medication from stock.

Restocks medications into automated dispensing cabinets in appropriate patient care areas.

Manages emergency medication inventory in carts/kits, including ordering, restocking, organizing, documenting, and removing expired/damaged products; performs regular checks.

Maintains medication rooms with stocked medications and removes expired or discontinued medications.

Handles automated dispensing cabinet return bins and weekly cycles.

Uses unit-dose machine to package bulk medications and compounds non-sterile medications per standard formulas and procedures.

Performs cycle counts of the carousel and maintains records.

Assists in medication management within assigned patient care area; supports Pharmacy neatness and equipment care.

Conducts temperature inspections of refrigerators in automated dispensing areas.

Handles financial transactions: prepares patient billing information, bills third-party benefits, troubleshoots insurance issues, and selects appropriate pay codes/plans.

Inspects assigned medication storage areas monthly with records of inspection.

Greets and assists customers, participates in point-of-sale transactions, and provides customer service.

Provides patient/customer assistance by phone and triages calls as appropriate.

Completes assigned work accurately by end of shift and maintains quality control documentation.

Communicates effectively with nursing, physicians, and ancillary services to support department goals and maintain a positive work environment.

Maintains collaborative, team-oriented relationships with peers.

Physical Requirements

Ability to walk and stand for 90% of the day; occasionally lift up to 30 lbs.

Frequent reaching and grasping at/above shoulder level.

Pushing and/or pulling non-motorized equipment weighing 40 to 60 lbs.

Manual dexterity to operate prescription medications and computer keyboard.

Ability to see medications, computer screens, and reports.

Reading automated dispensing reports regularly.

Ability to work in areas with dust, dirt, and temperature changes; potential exposure to broken glass and hazardous chemicals.

Skills & Abilities

Organized and systematic work approach.

Ability to perform work in a timely and efficient manner.

Excellent telephone etiquette.

Knowledge of hazardous substance handling, sterile compounding techniques, and mathematical calculations.

Extensive knowledge of medications, including brand/generic names, dosing forms, indications, formulary status, and strengths.
