Opportunity Central Library serves hundreds of thousands of patrons each year, offering a dynamic space for learning, recreation, and community engagement. The Central Regional Safety Coordinator plays a vital role in maintaining a welcoming, safe environment for all visitors.
Key Responsibilities
Manage the use of the library’s public spaces, coordinating with administrators, library staff, and security officers.
Lead initiatives on situational awareness, de‑escalation, and emergency response, conducting workshops, meetings, and emergency drills.
Develop and deliver training for staff on safety protocols, documentation procedures, and incident reporting.
Serve as subject‑matter expert for ongoing safety programs, supporting PICs (Persons‑in‑Charge) and security personnel across the library system.
Coordinate incident reviews, provide feedback, and support equity and inclusion efforts related to safety practices.
Act as the PIC at Central Library, engaging patrons, enforcing library rules, and responding to safety and security incidents.
Model inclusive, culturally appropriate, and trauma‑informed approaches in all interactions.
Collaborate with staff to prevent, mitigate, and respond to safety incidents, ensuring timely communication with first responders when necessary.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
At least two years of safety and security experience in publicly accessible environments.
At least two years of customer service experience with direct public contact.
Proficient in de‑escalation techniques.
Expertise in coordinating security and emergency responses in large public facilities.
Experience managing complex staff schedules.
Ability to design, implement, and train staff on safety and customer‑service procedures.
Knowledge of working with people experiencing homelessness, addiction, or mental illness.
Valid criminal records check (a conviction is not an automatic bar to employment).
Preferred Qualifications
Three years of supervisory experience, particularly as a Person‑in‑Charge.
Experience in a library setting.
Trauma‑informed approach to building safety and trust.
Awareness of barriers faced by communities outside the dominant culture.
Equity lens in policy and programming, advancing racial justice and understanding of intersectionality.
