Position Summary We are hiring an Oil & Gas Tax Principal based out of our Houston, TX office. You will lead tax engagements, supervise staff, and build client relationships.
How You’ll Spend Your Time
Managing tax compliance and advisory services for energy sector clients, focusing on upstream (E&P) oil and gas partnerships.
Managing client engagements from planning to completion, ensuring efficiency and budget adherence.
Leading a coordinated, cross‑functional team to pursue energy clients and emerging business development opportunities.
Participating in strategy sessions, marketing calls, and events with regional and national teams.
Working with industry and service line engagement teams to ensure appropriate resources and deliverables are provided.
Providing energy‑landscape insights and communicating them to firm leadership.
Contributing to industry and service line leadership with perspective and commentary on opportunities and challenges.
Advising on complex tax matters, including IDC, tax depletion, depreciation, and E&P‑specific deductions.
Developing and implementing tax strategies to ensure compliance and optimize client outcomes.
Collaborating with external advisors, including attorneys and financial professionals.
Providing tax advisory on transactions, including acquisitions, divestitures, and restructuring.
Conducting tax research, preparing memorandums, and applying technical expertise to complex issues.
Leading and mentoring engagement teams, providing guidance, training, and career development.
Supporting recruiting, retention, and team‑building initiatives.
The kinds of people we want to talk to have many of the following:
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, JD, or a Master of Science in Taxation preferred.
CPA license.
8+ years of prior experience in a public accounting tax department, leading multiple engagements and supervising staff, with upstream (E&P) oil and gas client experience required.
Exceptional client service and communication skills, with a demonstrated ability to develop and maintain outstanding client relationships.
Proven business development experience and success building a book of business.
Ability to manage multiple engagements and competing projects in a rapidly growing, fast‑paced, interactive, results‑based team environment.
Strong leadership, training, and mentoring skills, with excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills to represent the firm.
Excellent analytical, organizational, project management skills, and strong attention to detail.
Proficiency in tax software such as GoSystems, BNA Income Tax Planner, and Checkpoint.
Strong research and compliance skills.
Ability to travel as needed.
