Job Summary
The anticipated duration of this assignment is approximately 3 months. This is a temporary Medical Assistant position supporting the UCSF Cancer Center's ambulatory group practices across multiple campuses and satellite offices. Under the supervision of the Administrative Nurse Manager and MA Supervisor, and in collaboration with the clinical nursing staff, the Hospital Assistant III plays a critical role in delivering high-quality patient care and ensuring smooth clinic operations. This position requires flexibility to float across various Cancer Center specialty practices and a strong commitment to UCSF's Telephone and House Standards. Key Responsibilities
Clinical Support & Patient Care
Validate, obtain, and document patient-reported information and vital signs. Assist with medication reconciliation and patient history updates (e.g., allergies, tobacco use, family history). Support nurses and providers during patient exams and procedures. Perform routine clinical tasks (e.g., height, weight, pain screening, chief complaint documentation). Act as chaperone and assist in complex procedures (e.g., laser therapy, TRUS, IRC) with appropriate competencies. Maintain infection control standards and perform sterile processing (e.g., Cidex OPA). Provide patient transport and monitor patient flow in and out of clinics. Collect specimens and perform Point of Care Testing, including EKGs and QA/QC documentation. Ensure patient communication and care coordination through timely updates, Mercury Messaging, and collaboration with team members. Clinical Documentation & Systems (APEX)
Enter and document vitals, histories, and Point of Care Testing in the Electronic Health Record (APEX). Pend scripted provider orders and medication refills. Open and manage telephone encounters, staff messages, and referrals. Schedule labs, radiology, and other diagnostic services per provider orders. Patient Experience & Communication
Maintain professionalism and courtesy in all patient interactions and phone communications. Notify front office and waiting room of provider delays over 30 minutes. Proactively communicate service delays and advocate for timely care. Assist with resolving patient concerns using conflict resolution skills. Operational Support & Maintenance
Ensure exam rooms, hub areas, and labs are clean and stocked. Manage inventory and order medical supplies as needed. Schedule complex procedures and obtain insurance authorizations for medications, procedures, and diagnostic reviews. Assign break coverage and monitor clinic staffing needs. Participate in Quality Improvement and patient experience initiatives. Maintain logs and documentation (e.g., crash cart, temperature logs, disaster cabinet). Adhere to Ambulatory Services and infection control policies and protocols. Compensation & Benefits
The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. 6 months relevant Medical Assisting experience AHA BLS Certification Ability to communicate effectively, both directly and over the phone. This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Health locations. Preferred Qualifications
One year's experience as a Hospital Assistant in a medical practice. Experience with insurance verification, medical record data abstraction, medical assisting, or patient financial services strongly preferred. Degree from accredited medical assisting school. Bi-lingual or multi-lingual capability (Spanish, Cantonese, Russian) strongly preferred. Current State of California Phlebotomy Certification (CPT1) Equal Employment Opportunity
