Your New Role… CNN’s Climate & Weather team is seeking a reporter/producer with strong writing skills to track down stories that resonate with digital audiences in a breaking news environment.
The ideal candidate is self-motivated and prioritizes trustworthy and objective reporting even in a fast-paced environment on tight deadlines. They should possess the tools to easily suss out fact from fiction. They know words matter and are able to communicate their reporting in straightforward, no-nonsense ways. They are fascinated by the natural world, thrives in a fast-paced news environment and has their finger on the pulse of emerging trends.
This person will report out weather-related impacts, gather and clear photo and video and write short text that could be used in any medium across all of CNN’s platforms. They will serve as the backbone for daily reporting for the climate and weather team and must be able to juggle multiple tasks at once.
They will join one of CNN’s most innovative multi-platform teams and work directly with meteorologists and climate experts to support forecasts and extreme weather events, including hurricanes, blizzards, tornado outbreaks and geomagnetic storms.
Finally, this person must embody the CNN Climate & Weather team’s ethos — we are looking for a team-oriented collaborator who values diversity, elevates their colleagues and works well with other teams in the newsroom, including reporters, data visuals journalists and special projects.
Your Role Accountabilities… Chase reportable facts to help CNN beat competitors on breaking weather news and distinctive reporting
Conduct interviews for facts, video, sound and storylines
Verify and secure rights for photos and video
Work with weather and climate experts to pitch, research, report, script and write for digital platforms
Monitor video and photo sources for news assets, viral moments and opportunities to explain weather science
Maintain relationships with media vendors to keep CNN in good standing and secure priority elements
Develop and maintain element-clearance and newsgathering workflows for consistent team communication
Qualifications & Experience… 3+ years newsroom reporting and writing, ideally digital
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, media or communications, or equivalent experience
Rights and clearances experience; basic media rights knowledge
Familiarity with weather and climate newsgathering, including sourcing pitfalls
Proven ability to write for broad digital audiences on tight deadlines
Reporting and fact-checking experience; knack for identifying strong characters
Strong news judgment; passion for journalism and extreme weather
Exceptional communication and organization
Strong interpersonal skills; collaborative, team-oriented
Willing to work holidays, weekends, overnights and extended hours as news demands
