Description
Reporting to the Dean, the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Academic Programs supports the Dean in overseeing faculty affairs (recruitment, support, tenure/promotion, and development) and curriculum management for the Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (HCLAS). The Associate Dean collaborates with university administration, faculty, and departments to foster a cohesive and supportive academic environment. This position requires occasional attendance at weekend or evening admission and other events.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Faculty Affairs
Supports the Dean in recruitment and hiring.
Coordinates faculty personnel processes for all HCLAS faculty.
Drafts the Dean’s letters for continuing personnel actions and ensures accurate documentation.
Serves as a liaison between faculty and administration on policy and procedure in faculty affairs.
Manages annual faculty evaluations and performance management processes, including review of Course and Teacher Ratings (CTRs).
Advises faculty on professional development and collaborates with the Senior Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs and the Senior Vice Provost for Research on development initiatives.
Designs and implements support for HCLAS faculty preparing tenure and promotion applications.
Oversees administration of research awards (e.g. the Stessin Award) within HCLAS and coordinates reviews for Distinguished Professorships.
Analyzes faculty progression and success data; proposes initiatives to support development and retention.
Assists with special projects, including competitive teaching and scholarship opportunities that enhance the HCLAS academic and research profile.
Oversees maintenance of the HCLAS Faculty Handbook to ensure alignment with current policies and best practices.
Organizes events, forums, and gatherings to build faculty community, solicit feedback, and share best practices.
Curriculum Support and Development
Provides administrative support to the HCLAS Curriculum Committee and Graduate Committee, including scheduling, agenda preparation, follow-up, and documentation.
Supports faculty in developing distinctive new academic programs.
Collaborates with other schools on curricular development of cross-school programs.
Oversees the annual review and editing of the HCLAS Bulletin.
Manages updates to 8-semester sample schedules in collaboration with the Center for University Advisement.
Coordinates Study Abroad program proposals with the Associate Provost for Academic Support and Global Initiatives.
Serves as Dean-level approver in Curriculog, ensuring accurate submission and tracking of course and program proposals.
Prepares NYSED applications and maintains compliance of course and program registrations with state and accreditation standards.
Other
Leads projects advancing the University and HCLAS strategic goals in faculty affairs and curriculum development.
Supports office participation in open houses, admitted student days, and new student orientations.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Ph.D. in any Arts and Sciences discipline or an MFA degree in one of the areas represented in HCLAS required.
8+ years of full-time faculty experience.
3+ years of prior faculty leadership/administrative experience.
Ability to demonstrate discretion in handling confidential information.
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work across functional units.
Preferred Qualifications
Specific experience related to projects that support faculty affairs and academic program development preferred.
Experience in conducting, directing, or supporting interdisciplinary work.

Salary/Salary Range
$135,000 - $150,000

Hofstra University provides the above salary* as a good faith estimate of the starting pay range which considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience and education. In addition to the salary offered, we offer a collegial and inclusive culture, and a benefits program which includes generous paid time off, paid holidays, tuition remission for employees and eligible dependents, and a retirement plan with University contributions.
