Job Description
Provide leadership, planning, scheduling, and directing the work of journey‑level fire alarm control technicians; perform skilled work in the operation, inspection, testing, servicing and maintenance of complex building fire detection/alarm, life safety and clock systems.
Work as a team partner with fire alarm control technicians, Fire Construction Maintenance Specialist, and Fire Alarm and Life Safety System Manager daily in a professional, respectful and collaborative manner.
Keep manager informed of project status, work progress, and required project materials and equipment.
Resolve complex fire detection/alarm and life systems issues, clock issues, associated equipment and personnel issues.
Develop work plans, methods, and standard operating practices to be followed by assigned personnel.
Schedule and perform work in accordance with regulatory requirements and maintain detailed records for the regulatory preventive maintenance program.
Coordinate with EH&S Fire Protection Engineers, department heads, campus engineering, construction coordinators, contractors, facilities trades, building occupants and other clients.
Assign and lead shop personnel in the performance of installation, maintenance, repair, calibration, commissioning, and troubleshooting of system failures.
Inspect work for quality and completeness; ensure clients are advised of progress and when work is complete.
Assist with planning, record keeping, and creating work assignments and work orders.
Develop preliminary cost estimates for installations and repairs.
Field phone calls and emails to answer requests and questions of clients and others.
Maintain and update system schematics through red line system changes and create schematics as needed.
Work collaboratively with other skilled trades’ leads, supervisors, managers and department heads.
Respond to emergencies such as fire alarm malfunctions to minimize loss of property and disruption of life‑safety systems.
Coordinate contract work with Capital Projects Office personnel, procurement and others for fire detection/alarm system shutdowns and specifications.
Inspect projects to ensure compliance with local standards and codes, maintaining records of work.
Monitor equipment and supply needs, coordinate with supervisor, and requisition parts and materials.
Participate in university process improvement initiatives such as Balanced Score Card, Lean and Idea Systems.
Support the goals and objectives of the department.
Comply with occupational health and safety regulations, ethical laws, and use of state resources.
Ensure assigned personnel comply and report infractions to supervisor.
Provide leadership related to lead and asbestos‑containing items in accordance with safety rules.
Follow and enforce adherence to all university and facilities services policies.
Assist in providing training to assigned personnel.
Must be available to work overtime, including evenings and weekends.
Perform all duties of a journey‑level fire alarm control technician and other related duties as required.

Education & Experience Minimum Qualifications
One year of full‑time experience as a journey control technician, or equivalent trade skill.
Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license may be required.
Additional Qualifications
Experience and working knowledge of fire alarm regulatory requirements in NFPA 72 and the Seattle Fire Code.
Conversant with at least one fire alarm system and programming language: Simplex, Gamewell, Edwards, Silent Knight.
Detailed working knowledge of Simplex fire alarm systems and True Site networking systems.
Excellent customer service, written and oral communication skills.
Ability to read and interpret drawings and construction documents related to building fire detection/alarm and life safety systems.
Ability to lead by example and hold employees accountable.
Basic desktop computer skills: Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook; willingness to learn Access and Publisher.
Possession of a valid N.I.C.E.T. level II license (or higher).
Experience with Washington State safety rules and regulations, WISHA and OSHA.
Experience with Lean implementation.
Desired Qualifications
Two‑year associate’s degree in electronics or equivalent.
One or more years of lead experience with a major fire alarm system contractor.
Five or more years of full‑time experience as a journey‑level fire alarm control technician with a major contractor.

Must be able to lift or carry heavy objects, work in confined spaces and on ladders, catwalks and high lifts.
Must be a strong team leader and able to work both independently and as a team.
Must maintain a professional appearance.
Must possess or obtain within 60 days of employment a valid Seattle Fire Dept FA‑1 Certification and successfully retest as a Fire Control Technician Lead.
Must be able to wear a respirator on the job as required.
Must participate in medical screening/monitoring as required for work assignments in specific research areas.
Must respond to system emergencies during regular and outside business hours.
Must follow written or verbal instructions and communicate in English about chemicals, supplies, and equipment.
Regular and predictable attendance is required.
