The Department of Art at California State University Fullerton invites applications for a tenure‑track Assistant Professor position in Art History with an appointment to begin Fall Semester 2026.

Position This is a tenure‑track Assistant Professorship in Modern and Contemporary Art History with a global perspective. CSUF is committed to scholars who bring both the breadth and depth of their specializations to the classroom as well as to individually mentored projects such as Independent Studies and MA theses. Teaching is focused primarily on undergraduate learning with some combined classes that include graduate students.

The candidate will teach large lecture classes in Modern Art and Contemporary Art both with a global perspective. Smaller upper‑division classes on a focused area of inquiry may also be offered and course development in the area of specialization is likewise expected. CSUF faculty are responsible for sustained active scholarly work commensurate with the requirements for tenure. Art History faculty teach a 4/4 course load, advise Art History majors and MA students, supervise MA theses, and serve on committees within the department, college, and university.

Ph.D. in Art History

Demonstrated success or potential for success as a scholar in modern and contemporary art within a global perspective

Demonstrated commitment to and excellence in undergraduate teaching

Experience in working collaboratively with colleagues

Ability to balance excellent teaching, scholarly research, and service

Demonstrated potential for effective integration of technology into instruction

Demonstrated commitment to working effectively with students from intersecting marginalized social groups

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of institutional practices in modern and contemporary art worlds

Successful scholarly accomplishments including publications, conference presentations, grants, and fellowships

Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues across disciplines

The College and Department The Department of Visual Arts serves approximately 3,000 undergraduate art majors and 24 graduate students with 27 full‑time and 100 lecturer faculty. The department offers both a BA in Art and BFA in Art with 13 areas of concentration in addition to an MA and MFA in Art with 9 areas of concentration. CSUF is located about 30 miles from downtown Los Angeles in metropolitan Orange County and presents a full range of fine arts and professional programs including a nationally recognized art gallery located in the Visual Arts complex and the Grand Central Art Center, a 45,000‑sq. ft. graduate studio/residence/exhibition facility located 15 minutes from campus. The Department of Visual Arts at California State University Fullerton is fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design.
