Automation & Controls Engineer - Food & Beverage

We’re hiring an Automation & Controls Engineer to support engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) projects for clients in food, beverage, pharmaceutical, life sciences, and industrial sectors. This role involves full-cycle project execution—from front-end engineering through detailed design, installation, and start-up. You’ll help deliver robust control system solutions for facilities ranging from small-scale upgrades to complex new builds.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and implement PLC, HMI, SCADA, MES, and batch control systems
Create controls deliverables: device lists, I / O lists, control narratives, wiring diagrams, panel designs, and layout drawings
Support design of electrical systems (480VAC and below) including power distribution, grounding, and conduit layout
Prepare and review specifications for control panels, instrumentation, and engineered equipment
Collaborate with project managers, process engineers, procurement, construction, and design teams
Lead commissioning and start-up of control systems at project sites (domestic travel ~30%)
Coordinate Factory Acceptance Testing (FATs) and ensure quality, compliance, and documentation
Review P&ID and define instrumentation / control scope with process teams
Mentor junior engineers and contribute to department standards development
Track design progress, support proposal development, and assist with estimating hours and resources
Support client relationships and help identify future automation opportunities
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Controls, Electrical, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering (ABET accredited)
3+ years of automation and controls experience in an EPC or industrial setting
Strong understanding of control panel design, I / O systems, and electrical design standards (e.g., ANSI, IEEE)
Experience with PLC and HMI platforms such as Rockwell and Siemens
Proficient in Microsoft Office; AutoCAD / MicroStation familiarity preferred
FE (EIT) certification required; ability to obtain TWIC
Excellent analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills
Ability to travel up to 30% for site support and commissioning
Preferred Qualifications
PE license preferred
SCADA platforms (FactoryTalk, Wonderware, Ignition)
MES systems (PTC ThingWorx, Sepasoft, Parsec TrakSYS)
Safety systems (ISO 13849, ISA / IEC 61511)
Control standards such as UL508A, NFPA, ISA, IEC
Risk assessment and safety system design
PlantPAX, PackML, BatchSIM, SISTEMA, and IAB tools
Multiple PLC platforms (GE, Modicon, Mitsubishi, Triconex, etc.)
