The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR), Division of Urban Forestry, is hiring for one (1) Nursery Worker I position located in Wahiawa. The Nursery Worker I propagates, cultivates, fertilizes, and otherwise cares for plants in a nursery.

What You’ll Do

Propagate, cultivate, water, stake, re-stake, tie, prune, fertilize, transplant, and repot plants.

Care for accessioned, display, and landscape plants in the nurseries and garden.

Install, operate, repair, and maintain irrigation systems and timers.

Maintain the garden in a neat and presentable condition by mowing, string trimming, spraying, mulching, and hauling rubbish.

Apply pesticides to control insects, weeds, and diseases.

Operate a flatbed truck to move horticultural equipment and supplies to job sites, provide supplies from outside vendors, and refuel vehicles and fill gas cans.

Perform other related duties as required.

Special Work Requirements

Exposure to horticultural chemicals, working on steep, wet grades, in water, rocky uneven slopes, and low precipices while wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Required to work weekends, holidays, and evenings for seven-day/week operations, special events, and emergency response.

May serve as Disaster Response Worker during declared emergencies.

Training and Experience Requirements Experience and/or training of sufficient scope and quality to demonstrate competence in plant care and cultivation, including propagation. Such experience should demonstrate knowledge of a variety of trees and plants, their care and propagation, nursery practices, tools, equipment, plant diseases, pests, and control methods. The ability to perform grafting, air‑layering, and seed germination, identify plants, diagnose common plant diseases, insects, and pests, use nursery tools, and follow written instructions is required. Completion of the AG149 Plant Propagation course from Windward Community College or an equivalent regionally‑accredited program may substitute for the required experience.

Verification Requirement: Submit evidence of education to receive credit for substitution, such as an electronic copy of the Certificate of Professional Development from Windward Community College or an official transcript with the embossed seal.

License and Certificate Requirements

Valid Hawaii State driver’s license (Type 3) before appointment.

Pulmonary Function Test (PFT) before appointment.

Hearing Conservation Program (HCP) Test before appointment.

First Aid/CPR/AED certificates before completion of probation.
