The ESL Department at Los Medanos College (LMC) is excited to seek enthusiastic applicants for a full‑time, tenure‑track Assistant Professor in English as a Second Language (ESL), beginning Fall 2026.

About the Position This tenure‑track instructional position includes a multiple‑course teaching assignment each fall and spring semester, requiring discipline expertise, cultural humility, and student‑centered practices (note: summer session opportunities are also available). Teaching will include face‑to‑face morning, afternoon, and night hours as well as online instruction. The role involves collaboration with the Department on curriculum, program, and student‑success efforts.

Applicants should be bi‑ or multilingual/cultural and share backgrounds with our students. We encourage historically marginalized and/or underrepresented identities, including women, Black, Indigenous, and people of color, and nonbinary and transgender individuals.

About the Department The ESL Department serves a diverse population of students, including immigrants, asylum seekers, refugees, undocumented students, one‑and‑half generation students, adult‑school transfer students, international students, and other under‑represented groups. We provide certificate‑based language offerings, orientation, navigation, engagement classes, registration support, peer tutoring & advising, academic counseling, club and program activities, and outreach to the East Contra Costa community. Recruitment Timeline

Initial review of applications: December 2025.

Fielded applicants invited to interview: January 2026 (in‑person February 2026). Applicants responsible for travel expenses.

Final interviews: March 2026.

Duties and Responsibilities

Advance equitable student learning through exemplary instruction.

Participate in assessment of student learning outcomes.

Collaborate in curriculum development and program review.

Engage in department program improvement initiatives.

Participate in department, division, and college committees.

Engage in professional development activities.

Maintain current knowledge in subject matter area and effective teaching strategies.

Maintain professional conduct and ethics standards.

Inform students of course requirements and evaluation procedures.

Prepare and grade assignments and examinations.

Maintain attendance, records, and documentation.

Hold sufficient office hours.

Participate in shared governance processes.

Minimum Qualifications

Ed.D., Ph.D., or master’s degree in TESL, TESOL, applied linguistics, English with TESL emphasis, or equivalent.

Master’s in TESL, TESOL, applied linguistics with TESL emphasis, linguistics with TESL emphasis, English with TESL emphasis or education with TESL emphasis; OR bachelor’s in TESL, TESOL, English with TESL certificate, linguistics with TESL certificate, applied linguistics with TESL certificate, or any foreign language with TESL certificate; AND (master’s in linguistics, applied linguistics, English, composition, bilingual/bicultural studies, etc.)

Desired Qualifications

Demonstrated success in employing inclusive, culturally responsive, equity-oriented pedagogies for adult ESL students.

Experience teaching basic to advanced ESL classes, preferably in an open‑access community college setting.

Experience designing and implementing ESL curriculum and assessment.

Ability to collaborate in improving an ESL program and student‑success supports.

Commitment to ongoing professional learning and engagement.

Professional Experience and Credentials License/Certificates/Credentials are desirable but not mandatory.
