The Department of Finance, Insurance and Real Estate (FIRE) in the School of Business at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) offers undergraduate majors in Finance, Real Estate, Finance with a concentration in Risk Management and Insurance or a concentration in Financial Planning, and Financial Technology. The department also offers minors in actuarial science, finance, real estate, and risk management and insurance. The Department offers a Master of Science concentration in Finance, a Master of Science concentration in Real Estate, a Graduate Certificate in Real Estate, and a Master of Decision Analytics concentration in Financial Analytics. Additionally, FIRE faculty teach in the MBA and Executive MBA programs. They also have opportunities to be involved in the Ph.D. in Business program.

The Department has 13 full-time faculty who are active researchers and engaged teachers. In addition, it has three full-time directors who run the Kornblau Real Estate program, the Risk Management and Insurance Program, Capital Markets, and the Virginia Credit Union Financial Success Center. The department is committed to the advancement of high-quality research in line with the University’s Carnegie classification as R1: Doctoral University - Very High Research Activity. FIRE faculty members have published in a wide range of leading journals including the Journal of Finance, the Journal of Financial Economics, The Review of Financial Studies, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Journal of Banking and Finance, Journal of Risk and Insurance, Financial Management, Journal of Money, Credit and Banking, Journal of International Money and Finance, Journal of Corporate Finance, Journal of Empirical Finance, Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics, and Real Estate Economics. The department supports WRDS platform and databases including Eventus, Datastream Pro, Mergers & Acquisitions (Refinitiv), New Issues (Refinitiv), –Institutional (13F) Holdings (Refinitiv), CRSP, Compustat, Bloomberg, SNL, Audit Analytics, and MSCI GMI Ratings.

The School of Business at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) is fully accredited by the AACSB and is housed in a state-of-the-art facility, Snead Hall. Since its founding in 1937, the School of Business has built strong ties with the Richmond community and beyond. Offering 13 bachelor’s and 19 master’s degrees, as well as the Ph.D. in Business, we welcome nearly 4,000 students each year. Our programs develop skills that result in highly sought-after graduates with many national corporations identifying VCU’s School of Business as a target school for recruitment.

FIRE Department at Virginia Commonwealth University, in Richmond, Virginia, invites applicants for a full-time tenured department chair at the rank of Full Professor to start in August 2026.

Responsibilities The Chair’s assigned workload will be 50% administrative, 20% research, 20% teaching, and 10% service. The chair provides leadership, promotes a climate for faculty and student success, plans and schedules courses, and manages the Department’s fiscal resources.

Required Qualifications Must possess a Ph.D. in a discipline related to the department’s programs. We are open to candidates from any of the department’s disciplines: finance, fintech, blockchain, corporate social responsibility, personal finance, financial economics, real estate, risk management and insurance. Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications A demonstrated record or the potential for academic leadership. An established record of high-quality scholarly research. An established research record, potential for external funding, and potential for scholarship or teaching that complements or expands existing expertise in the department.
