Position Summary The Quality Lab Coordinator is a pivotal member of the KCC Quality Department, responsible for managing the integrity of measurement systems, executing dimensional inspections, coordinating external testing to investigate supplier non‑conforming materials, and supporting supplier quality activities. This role ensures that all measurement and testing processes at KCC meet internal and external standards, and that data is translated into actionable insights for technical and non‑technical stakeholders. The ideal candidate will be detail‑oriented, technically proficient, and capable of cross‑functional collaboration in a fast‑paced manufacturing environment for a production based lab with regular interaction across all KCC departments.
Primary Responsibilities Dimensional Inspection & First Article Reporting
Perform First Article Inspections (FAI) using CMM, hand tools, and other metrology equipment.
Interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, and specifications to develop inspection plans.
Document and report dimensional results in standardized formats (e.g., FAI/PPAP).
Collaborate with Supplier Quality, Engineering, Purchasing, Field Service, and Production to resolve component discrepancies and validate new designs or processes.
Coordinate incoming inspection activities of purchased components (as required) including the development of AQL.
Conduct dimensional capability studies and report results for key product characteristics (e.g., Cpk, Cp, histograms).
Conduct gauge MSA including R&R to ensure appropriate gauge selection and usage.
Operate and maintain lab equipment including various gauges, testers, and measuring equipment.
Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting of lab equipment.
Train team members on gauge and lab equipment usage and safety protocols.
Calibration Program Management
Own and maintain the company‑wide calibration program and gauge audit process for all gauges, fixtures, and measurement devices.
Determine, schedule, and track calibration intervals, ensuring zero overdue equipment.
Interface with external calibration vendors and internal stakeholders to ensure timely service and documentation.
Maintain calibration certificates and ensure traceability to national/international standards (e.g., NIST).
Conduct internal audits of calibration records and support external audits (ISO/customer audits).
Plan and conduct internal gauge verifications/calibrations (micrometers, calipers, etc.) as appropriate.
Supplier Quality Support
Collaborate with Supplier Quality Engineers to conduct root cause investigations including tear down analysis of purchased components.
Provide backup support for the purchased component RMA process—including collections, returns, and related activities—managed by the Supplier Quality Technician function.
Assist Supplier Quality with initial responses to purchased component defects found on the production floor.
Assist Supplier Quality Engineering with containment, sorting, documentation, and communication of supplier non‑conformances.
Occasional travel to external labs or supplier sites may be required.
Coordinate and track external testing for non‑conforming purchased component resolution (as required) ensuring results are received and reviewed promptly.
Summarize and translate technical external testing reports into executive‑level summaries for management, customers, and cross‑functional teams.
Data Analysis & Communication
Analyze measurement and test data to identify trends, risks, and improvement opportunities.
Create dashboards, charts, and summaries for internal reporting.
Present findings to cross‑functional teams at all levels in KCC.
Maintain organized records in digital and physical formats for traceability and compliance.
Participate in Lean, Six Sigma, and Kaizen initiatives related to lab operations and quality systems.
Support internal and external audits (ISO 9001, customer audits).
Recommend improvements to lab processes, equipment, and documentation practices.
Qualifications Education & Experience
Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Quality, Metrology, or related technical field preferred.
Minimum 4 years of experience in a manufacturing quality lab or metrology environment.
Experience with calibration systems and dimensional inspection tools required.
Working knowledge of developing dimensional and testing reports for FAI/PPAPs.
Technical Skills
Proficient in utilizing gauges and various measurement equipment.
Strong understanding of GD&T and blueprint reading.
Able to manipulate basic CAD files to extract dimensional data and/or prints.
Familiarity with calibration software (e.g., GAGEtrak).
Skilled in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; experience with Minitab or other statistical tools is a plus.
ERP system experience a plus to research revision levels and associated part numbers.
Soft Skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to translate technical data into clear, concise summaries for non‑technical audiences.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
