Overview
Staff Attorney – Family Law (Domestic Violence Project) for a full-time position with 2-4 years of litigation experience. The Attorney will join a team of attorneys and advocates to help survivors of intimate partner violence, and their children gain safety, security, and independence. The Attorney will provide legal representation and advocacy on custody/visitation, orders of protection, child/spousal support, and divorce, and lead community-based outreach and trainings. The ideal candidate thrives both independently and as part of a team, is comfortable with public speaking, and is passionate about building partnerships and community. About DVP
The Domestic Violence Project (DVP) helps survivors of intimate partner violence and their children live free of violence and abuse by combining legal and advocacy services to secure justice and a dignified quality of life. We consider intimate partner violence a human rights violation. We serve an average of 1,600 survivors annually across all five boroughs of NYC through direct services (legal representation in family law and immigration matters, holistic case management, empowerment groups) and an additional 2,000+ reached through community outreach, education, and clinics. Job Responsibilities
Zealously represent survivors in their family law matters. Collaborate with our entire DVP program to assist clients and increase effectiveness of programming. Provide consultation and advocacy throughout NYC’s Family Justice Centers. Conduct outreach, education, and know-your-rights events throughout NYC and remotely. Build and foster collaborative relationships with CBOs. Train and mentor interns and volunteers. Maintain records, statistics and funding requirements as needed. All other tasks as assigned by management in service of survivors of intimate partner violence. Requirements and Qualifications
Admission to the New York State Bar is mandatory. Fluency in Spanish or another community language is strongly preferred. Knowledge and understanding of intimate partner violence and trauma. Deep experience working with individuals of diverse backgrounds and lifestyles. Ability to work with clients in a sensitive and trauma-informed manner. Exceptional interpersonal, speaking, and writing skills and the ability to apply these skills in diverse situations. Comfortable with public speaking and highly motivated to cultivate new linkages. Strong organizational and administrative skills. Aptitude for intense and thorough negotiation and advocacy. Demonstrated ability to be flexible and work as a team member. Demonstrated ability to work independently. Interest and proclivity in working within a multi-disciplinary framework. Must be able to travel between boroughs. Able to work evenings if necessary. Seeking an attorney with 2-4 years of family law experience with starting salary of $75,363.18 – $78,529.27 commensurate with experience, and an additional $1,500 for proficiency in Spanish.
