Position Overview The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at California State University, Monterey Bay invites applications for a tenure‑track faculty position at the assistant or associate professor level to begin in Fall 2026. We seek applicants with a demonstrated commitment to teaching and research.

Responsibilities

Teach undergraduate courses in applied mathematics, computational mathematics, and/or data science (e.g., applied modeling, machine learning, optimization, statistics/data ethics, etc.).

Develop or expand curriculum offerings in data science and/or applied mathematics.

Maintain an active research program, ideally involving undergraduate student engagement.

Contribute to mentoring, advising, and supporting students from diverse backgrounds.

Participate in departmental, college, and university service.

Collaborate across disciplines and with local industry or community partners as appropriate.

Qualifications

Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics, Data Science, Statistics, or a closely related field by the date of appointment.

Ability to teach effectively at all undergraduate levels.

Commitment to working with a diverse student body, including first‑generation, low‑socioeconomic status, and minoritized students.

Experience or training in relevant computational tools (e.g., Python, R, MATLAB, SQL, etc.).

Demonstrated potential for research in applied mathematics and/or data science.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in teaching applied mathematics or data science courses, especially to diverse populations.

Research interest or experience in areas such as machine learning, scientific computing, mathematical modeling, high‑performance computing, optimization, data ethics, causal inference, or AI.

Experience mentoring students, including those from underrepresented backgrounds.

Familiarity with modern, evidence‑based data science or applied mathematics pedagogy and curriculum guidelines (e.g., ASA, SIAM).

Special Conditions of Employment

Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background check, including a criminal records check.

Persons holding this position are mandated reporters under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and must comply with applicable CSU executive orders.

The incumbent must maintain confidentiality as outlined in student privacy regulations.

Compensation and Benefits Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $7,500 to $7,917 per month ($90,000 to $95,000 annual). CSUMB offers a premium benefit package that includes outstanding health, dental & vision plans; a fee‑waiver education program; and membership in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS). Housing incentives may be available.
