Golf Course Superintendent
Compensation: $2,500 bonus, $1,000 paid at 240 days, $1,500 paid at 12 months.
Summary This position is located in the Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Department, Naval Station Great Lakes, Great Lakes, IL. The purpose of this position is to provide the technical expertise to design and implement a program of maintenance for the Golf Course, driving range, and practice putting green, which includes the greens, tees, fairways, roughs, the irrigation system, related facilities and equipment. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining the golf course within budgetary limitations.
Duties
Determine the requirements of pesticides, chemicals, fertilizer, and grass seed needed for upkeep of an 18‑hole golf course.
Inspect the course for damage and assess work in progress.
Ensure proper functioning of the irrigation system and apply the correct water amounts under various climatic conditions.
Direct soil nutrient and fertilizer applications for greens, fairways, and roughs; take soil samples and interpret results.
Handle and store pesticides and other toxic substances safely; prevent damage from small animals.
Manage the hazardous waste program for the course.
Detect turf damage by fungus and insects; apply fungicide, pesticide, and nematicides appropriately.
Calibrate spreaders and sprinklers for accurate application.
Maintain equipment and oversee repairs; advise on new equipment acquisitions.
Plan and implement changes and improvements to the golf course.
Requisition, store, and inventory equipment, pesticides, fertilizers, and other materials.
Supervise laborers and seasonal workers; provide training, job assignments, and performance evaluations.
Approve leave and verify timekeeping; provide job descriptions.
Prepare and submit annual budget estimates and purchase requests.
Maintain records per MWR Department requirements.
Assist with snow removal of MWR facilities.
Requirements
Must pass all applicable records and background checks.
Must successfully pass the E‑Verify employment verification check; any discrepancies must be resolved as a condition of employment.

Broad background in golf course maintenance and operations; experience of agronomic practices either through academic achievements or practical experience.

Professional expertise with golf course equipment.
Understanding of the rules of golf and the ability to view the course from the perspective of a patron.
Leadership and supervisory experience.
Required to have a valid state driver’s license, current CPR/First Aid certificate, and state and federal pesticide mixing licenses.
Education This position does not have a positive education requirement.
