The Children, Youth, and Families Division (CYF) seeks an Assistant Attorney General to lead juvenile litigation training and support child‑welfare case workers statewide.

Role Overview More About This Role:
The Assistant Attorney General will update, facilitate, and deliver legal and skills‑based training to AGO attorneys representing DCYF in child welfare cases. Responsibilities include leading the statewide Juvenile Litigation Training Committee, informing and supporting training for professional staff, and advising DCYF on case‑worker training and curricula. The role will consult with the Division Chief, DCYF lead counsel, and staff in the five AGO divisions that represent DCYF statewide. Legal issues covered include child‑welfare legal requirements, trial strategy, child‑welfare statutes, and Indian Child Welfare Act compliance.
Division Overview The CYF Division is located in Tumwater but may be outstationed in another AG’s Office. The division’s staff are talented, compassionate, collegial, and dedicated to protecting Washington State children, youth, and families.
Duties
Update and deliver training on child‑welfare law and juvenile litigation.
Lead the statewide Juvenile Litigation Training Committee.
Consult with DCYF and the AGO Division Chief on legal updates.
Coordinate with attorneys and staff across the five divisions that represent DCYF.
Prepare training materials, briefs, and client advice.
Provide ad‑hoc appellate or programmatic work as assigned.
Qualifications
Law degree from an ABA‑accredited law school or completion of the WSBA Rule 6 Law Clerk Program.
Washington State law license (or active pursuit of admission).
Experience training attorneys and professional staff on child‑welfare legal requirements.
Strong written and oral communication skills; ability to compose training material, pleadings, briefs, and client advice.
Collaborative, independent, and confident communicator.
Preferred: familiarity with adult learning and training techniques.
Supplemental Information The assistant attorney general position is represented by the Association of Washington Assistant Attorneys General. Salaries are set according to the AWAAG CBA. The position includes a 5% King County assignment pay for Seattle duty stations.
