Position Summary
The University of Georgia is seeking a qualified individual to pursue a doctoral degree in Horticulture. This position is located in Tifton, GA and will provide financial support through a graduate research assistantship.
Research focuses on managing whitefly and whitefly‑transmitted viruses in tomato, squash, and green beans. Responsibilities include conducting field trial germplasm screenings for resistance to tomato yellow leaf curl virus and cucurbit leaf crumple virus, collecting virus samples in commercial vegetable fields throughout Georgia, and identifying weeds that serve as alternative hosts.
Duties and Responsibilities
Conduct field trial germplasm screenings in tomato, squash, and green beans.
Collect and analyze virus samples in commercial vegetable fields throughout GA.
Identify weeds that serve as alternative hosts to whitefly‑transmitted viruses.
Write dissertation, scientific articles, and present findings at meetings.
Assist with other projects as needed.
Qualifications
Master’s degree in horticulture, agronomy, plant pathology, entomology, virology, or a closely related plant science field.
Strong background in plant science and field research experience.
Excellent research and communication skills.
Physical Demands Driving required.
Employment Details Graduate Research Assistant; exempt; FTE 0.325; start date 01/04/2022; employee.
Background Investigation Employment contingent upon completion of a background investigation, including a criminal background check and credit check.
