Agricultural/Hort Specialist - Advanced
Position Summary Grounds Services maintains approximately 758 acres of managed campus grounds and more than 700 acres of forest land/trails. Services are provided in Landscape Maintenance, Irrigation, Integrated Pest Management, Landscape Installation, Stormwater Management, Forest Management and Trail Maintenance, Parking Lot Maintenance and Arboriculture. The Agricultural/Hort Specialist – Advanced maintains existing and new landscapes that are part of campus buildings, roof and memorial gardens. Installs all new plant material following plans and/or approved horticultural/grounds practices and procedures; maintains the beds including pruning, weeding, mulching, fertilizing and spraying of plant material, which may include pesticides. May maintain detailed records of plant species, including research on the design and maintenance of such plants; and may install and maintain zone area systems in the assigned geographical area. Uses special tools for cultivation, maintenance and transportation of plants.
Minimum Education And Experience Requirements Graduation from high school and some experience in horticultural work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Special Licensure or Certification: May require North Carolina Pesticide License; North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, And Experience Experience in a commercial landscaping/grounds maintenance setting. Knowledge of irrigation management (installation, maintenance and controller operation). Ability to operate a wide assortment of power equipment (large mowers, tractor w/ attachments, skid steer, excavator, backhoe, etc.). Good working knowledge of turf management (cool and warm season). Plant knowledge/identification (shrubs & perennials). Verbal and written communication skills in order to delegate and supervise the assigned job tasks, ability to maintain an effective working relationship with coworkers, other Facilities Services shop personnel and the general campus community. Ability to evaluate existing conditions and delegate proper personnel to perform the duties required. Ability to serve as a mandatory employee and report to work in support of essential (mandatory) University operations, even when adverse weather or other emergency conditions, including, but not limited to a public health emergency, may require the university to close. NC Driver’s License or ability to obtain one prior to start date. Work may require knowledge of a unique and unusual collection of plants, impacting the cultivation and maintenance of the plants.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, And Experience Advanced level of experience in a commercial landscaping/grounds maintenance setting with experience in a supervisory role. A North Carolina Pesticide Applicators License.
Required Licenses/Certifications NC Driver’s License
Special Physical/Mental Requirements Ability to bend, stoop, lift, work from a ladder or an airlift, and walk behind or operate equipment on varied terrain for extended periods of time. Ability to move objects that weigh up to 50 pounds. Ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PE) including safety glasses, hearing protection and safety shoes.
Sign-On Bonus A SIGN -ON BONUS OF $4,451 IS AVAILABLE FOR THE SUCCESSFUL APPLICANT OF THIS POSITION. PAID IN 2 INSTALLMENTS WITHIN 12 MONTHS OF HIRE: $2,225.50 WITHIN 30 DAYS OF HIRE DATE & $2,225.50 12 MONTHS AFTER HIRE DATE.
Sign-On Bonus Eligibility To be eligible for a Sign-on bonus, an individual must not have worked in a probationary, permanent, or time-limited appointment in the last 12 months as an employee in North Carolina state government, including but not limited to the judicial system, state executive branch agencies, and the university system in a position subject to the State Human Resources Act. A newly hired permanent full time or permanent part-time (more than 20 hours a week) employee are eligible for a sign-on bonus (this will be prorated for employees working more than 20 hours and less than 40 hours per week). This SHRA Sign-on Bonus is contingent upon budget and final eligibility determination as of the effective date of hire. All recipients must sign the Pay Back Agreement form.
