Corrections Officer Trainee

position at the State Correctional Institution (SCI) in Cambridge Springs as a female‑only role for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Position Overview The Corrections Officer Trainee works under the direct supervision of a Corrections Officer in a state correctional facility. The role includes formal training sessions and on‑the‑job assignments to develop skills in the custody and supervision of inmates. Responsibilities include the care, custody, control, and non‑professional counseling of inmates.

Responsibilities

Direct and indirect contact with inmates and visitors.

Maintain security in cellblocks, housing units, cottages, work areas, dining, and recreation.

Conduct periodic and unannounced rounds, head counts, and security checks; report any unusual activity.

Work a 40‑hour week with shifts as assigned; available for overtime, weekends, holidays, and adverse weather conditions.

Participate in formal instruction in sociology, psychology, court procedures, self‑defense, leadership, custodial responsibilities, and facility structure.

Provide guidance to inmates during adjustment and correctional processes; prepare written reports.

Respond to emergency situations and use physical force if necessary to maintain safety.

Work in all areas of the institution as assigned; no telework option.

Wear provided uniforms and adhere to all safety and security protocols.

Compensation & Benefits Full‑time position. Starting hourly rate $22.97 with a maximum shift differential of $1.25 per hour. Eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55. Union membership applies. Comprehensive benefits include health, vision, dental, and wellness programs.

Qualifications

Valid Pennsylvania driving record.

Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA.

Compliance with the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) for cross‑gender viewing and searches of female inmates.

Ability to perform essential job functions.

PA residency requirement currently waived.

Legal & Medical Requirements

Pass a background investigation and meet CJIS compliance.

Complete a medical exam, psychological evaluation, and drug screening (urinalysis).
