Park Ranger I / II – Parks The County of Riverside seeks candidates to fill a Park Ranger I/II vacancy to support the Hidden Valley Wildlife Area located in Riverside. This recruitment is open to all applicants. Current County of Riverside employees and employees of Riverside’s Regional Parks and Open District may be considered before other applicants depending on the volume of applications received.

Responsibilities The Park Ranger is responsible for a variety of duties related to the daily operations, safety, and maintenance of County parks. Park Rangers play a vital role in providing excellent customer service, supporting fee collection and campground registration, engaging with visitors and community members, enforcing rules and regulations, assisting with challenging situations, and resolving visitor issues. The position requires conducting both vehicle and foot patrols.

Additional duties include:

Explain park policies, rules, regulations, and County ordinances; oversee visitor registration, fee collection, issuance of camping permits, and assignment of general public to various camping areas.

Participate in custodial duties, maintenance, and cleanup of park structures and grounds; work with maintenance personnel on minor construction, repairs, and improvements.

Answer public inquiries and complaints concerning park operations and maintenance.

Provide assistance in emergency situations; maintain fire prevention standards and practices as established by the State Department of Forestry and Fire Prevention and the United States Forest Service.

Patrol park areas to promote an orderly atmosphere, resolve problems, issue warnings and citations, and, if needed, utilize law enforcement agencies. May make appearances in court.

Patrol open‑space, wildlife habitat reserves, and conservation land; communicate and ensure compliance with park regulations and ordinances; work with maintenance personnel to maintain signs and access controls.

Plan and participate in habitat creation and restoration; assist in planning prescribed burns with County, state, and federal fire agencies.

Monitor and participate in court referral/work release programs.

Maintain records and prepare reports.

Qualifications Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in public administration, park or recreation management, forestry, botany, environmental science, or a closely related field.

Experience:

Two years of interacting with the public that included conflict resolution and customer service or customer support.

Three years of working in operations, maintenance, development, or protection of a park, forest, or public recreational or historical area.

One year as a Park Ranger I with the Riverside County Regional Park and Open‑Space District.

Additional certifications: Within 12 months of employment, incumbents must possess valid certificates in First Aid, CPR/AED, Basic Water Rescue issued by the American Red Cross or YMCA, and have successfully completed PC 832. Within one year of employment, incumbents must possess a valid certificate in Basic Water Rescue issued by the American Red Cross or YMCA. Incumbents must also have a valid Class C California Driver's License.

Assessment: Candidates will be required to take a general abilities assessment prior to being considered.

Additional Requirements for All Levels License: Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License is required at the time of application since the role will be patrolling in a county vehicle at the parks.

DOT Safety‑Sensitive Requirements: Applicants must complete DOT mandated alcohol and drug screening and submit a DMV driving record prior to hire.

Knowledge of natural resources conservation, park management, and general law enforcement; practical first aid and safety.

Ability to read, interpret, and enforce appropriate laws and regulations; train subordinates; maintain records and prepare clear reports; communicate effectively.

Environmental & Physical Requirements The Park Ranger I/II will be exposed to inclement weather, extreme heat, cold, and wet conditions for extended periods. The position requires the ability to patrol parks and perform maintenance under these conditions, including lifting heavy items, using chainsaws, and operating maintenance supplies. The selected candidate must be able to perform these duties with or without reasonable accommodation.

Schedule & Uniform The position follows a 5/40 schedule, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm with Monday and Tuesday off. Uniforms will be provided.
