Job Duties Corrections officers contribute to the public safety mission by providing for the safety and security of the public, staff, and inmates through effective and safe custody, control, and compliance with policy and procedure. They use evidence‑based practices and principles to enhance communication strategies and role modeling as part of multidisciplinary teams addressing inmate needs. Officers provide security over adult inmates at the institution and during transport, supervise daily inmate activities, observe and record behavior and movement to ensure safe confinement.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Valid driver’s license.

Demonstrated ability to read and comprehend workplace policies and procedures and prepare workplace reports and documentation.

Ability to lawfully possess a firearm in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Ability to successfully complete all pre‑employment requirements including medical screening, background check, and drug testing (including screening for marijuana use).

Additional Considerations Stable employment history, military or related criminal justice experience desired. Candidates at least 21 years old are preferred (waivers may be issued for 18‑20 year olds). Bilingual and multilingual applicants encouraged.

Background Investigation Requirements:

Drug Testing Requirements:

Applicants for safety‑sensitive positions are subject to a pre‑employment drug screen. Marijuana use is prohibited for positions requiring a firearm or a commercial driver’s license in official duties.
