Director of Marketing and Business Development Chicago Illinois Job ID: 20356 Seeking to hire an experienced Director of Marketing and Business Development. The position will report directly to the firm’s managing partner and the two other equity partners and will be responsible for working closely with our lawyers to recommend and execute a wide variety of strategic and targeted business development, marketing, and promotional initiatives to increase business, strengthen client and prospect relationships, promote the expertise of our lawyers, and enhance brand recognition. This position requires a creative and strategic thinker who can thrive in a fast‑paced environment and collaborate effectively with our lawyers to promote our services. The role requires dedication, diligence, and exceptional organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to handle sensitive information with discretion and professionalism.

Primary Responsibilities

Develop Marketing Strategies: Formulate and implement comprehensive marketing and public relations strategies to enhance the firm’s and its partners’ brand visibility and client engagement. Support planning and coordination of CLE and thought‑leadership programs for clients. Oversee participation in professional organizations, conferences, and other external events to leverage the firm’s and lawyers’ investment of time and money.

Collaborate with Legal Teams: Work closely with lawyers and legal staff to understand service offerings and develop marketing materials that accurately represent the firm’s capabilities.

Manage Social Media Presence and Website: Oversee the firm’s social media platforms, ensuring consistent and engaging content that aligns with the firm’s brand and objectives. Develop and manage the firm’s website and content.

Manage Solicitations for Legal Services: Lead the organization and submission of responses to requests for proposals and other solicitations for legal services, by coordinating across the firm to gather necessary information and ensuring compliance with solicitation requirements.

Business Development Support: Assist the equity and non‑equity partners with executing business development efforts. Work with non‑equity partners and interested associates to prepare personal business development plans and support their efforts.

Brand Management: Maintain and enhance the firm’s brand image through strategic initiatives, public relations activities, and consistent messaging. Develop and maintain media relations contacts with legal and business press. Conduct media outreach through press releases and bylined articles. Develop awards, rankings, and directory submissions on an annual basis. Manage and oversee the firm’s marketing contact mailing lists.

Market Research: Conduct market research to identify trends, opportunities, and competitive insights to inform marketing strategies.

Event Planning: Organize and manage firm-sponsored events, seminars, and webinars to promote the firm’s expertise and services.

Qualifications

Experience in Law Firm Legal Marketing: Minimum of ten years of experience in marketing within the legal industry including specific experience with small law firms with a substantial complex commercial litigation focus.

Strong Communication Skills: Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly and persuasively. Knowledge of MS Office suite, including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel, as well as Adobe Acrobat and marketing databases.

Proven Track Record in Brand Management: Demonstrated success in developing and managing brand strategies that drive business growth.

Understanding of the Legal Industry and Law Firms: In‑depth knowledge of private practice and the ability to translate this understanding into effective marketing strategies applicable to a small litigation‑only law firm.

Public Relations: Established media contacts in legal or business journalism, including experience with legal industry publications and conferences.

Ability to Work in a Fast‑Paced Environment: Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet tight deadlines. Flexibility and willingness to respond to issues outside of business hours.

Creative Problem‑Solving Skills: Ability to think creatively and develop innovative solutions to marketing challenges.

Education: Bachelor’s degree in marketing, business administration, or a related field is preferred.
