Duties
- Perform routine venipuncture specimen collections from outpatients and in selected locations.
- Receive all requests for testing into the laboratory computer package and verify accuracy and completeness.
- Interact with hospital personnel to correct discrepancies.
- Recognize emergency situations and take necessary action.
- Receive and sort specimens, check request slips for proper information, log specimens, and deliver to laboratory sections.
- Verify sample transport requirements for laboratory tests including cultures and biopsies.
- Prepare samples for testing (labeling, centrifugation, decanting, allocating).
- Distribute, store, and deliver supplies for phlebotomy services.
- Clean and restock the blood collection room and equipment storage areas.
- Use manual and computerized logging methods for phlebotomy requests.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
- U.S. Citizen or lawful permanent resident.
- Qualified phlebotomy technicians must be willing to undergo urinalysis drug testing before appointment.
- Selective Service registration required for males born after 12/31/1959.
- Background and security investigation required.
- Must be able to lift, stand, walk, bend, and operate a computer terminal for short periods.
- Proficiency in basic written and spoken English.
- Required vaccinations: influenza, COVID‑19 (as per VA policy).
Qualifications
Select Placement Factor: Experience performing phlebotomy/blood draws on patients (documentation required).
English Proficiency: Basic written and spoken English required.
Specialized Experience: Minimum of 6 months general experience and 6 months specialized experience in laboratory support or related technical work, with detailed resume documentation.
Education: Associate’s degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or related field, or accredited training program, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Full transcript or certification required.
The candidate must also meet the overall minimum qualifications for the Medical Technician (Series 0645) as stated in the federal job announcement.
Physical Requirements
Position may involve lifting, prolonged standing, walking, bending over, reaching, and occasional lifting. Must have adequate vision and digital dexterity to perform safe venipuncture procedures.
