You will report to the Associate Director of SLHR Management in the Student Life Human Resources unit. Our unit supports the full employment life cycle for approximately 1500 employees and approximately 3,000 temporary employees across the Division, including both professional and bargained‑for staff, and student and non‑student temporary employees.

This position is hybrid, allowing for remote work and participation in virtual meetings using video conferencing platforms such as Zoom, as well as mobile devices. You will also commute 2‑3 days per week across campus for in‑person meetings with different units within the division in the Ann Arbor area.

Responsibilities*

The HR Supervisor is a working supervisor who provides leadership to HR staff while also taking an active role in the daily management of Leave and Disability (L&D) programs and employee relations workplace investigations. In this dual capacity, the HR Supervisor balances supervisory responsibilities with hands‑on case management, ensuring compliance with employment laws and university policies while directly handling complex leave requests, disability accommodations, and sensitive employee workplace investigations. You will lead process improvement initiatives to streamline operations, enhance efficiency, and strengthen HR service delivery. We ask that you combine both big‑picture guidance and operational execution, promoting a respectful and supportive workplace culture while partnering with HR colleagues and leaders to resolve challenging employee relations matters.

Main Responsibilities and Expectations:

  • Provide supervision, guidance, and support to the L&D Partner, HR Business Partner, and HR Investigator while coaching managers and resolving employee concerns
  • Manage and administer Leave and Disability (L&D) programs with proficient knowledge of applicable employment laws and university policies
  • Conduct employee relations workplace investigations with fairness, consistency, and demonstrated expertise in investigatory practices
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives by applying experience in process optimization and project management
  • Oversee enhancements to L&D processes, investigation workflows, and HRBP service delivery while ensuring understanding of organizational goals
  • Apply evaluation skills to interpret HR reports, dashboards, and scorecards to identify trends and support data‑driven decision‑making
  • Contribute to strategic HR planning with the ability to build engagement, increase productivity, and align staff with organizational goals
  • Effectively convey ideas and build mutual understanding with employees and leaders, using collaboration to resolve complex issues to achieve positive outcomes.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or equivalent combination of education and experience/HR certification.
  • 8 or more years of experience in HR related areas such as managing leave and disability programs, employee and labor relations, conducting workplace investigations, or providing HR business partner support.
  • Direct supervision experience or equivalent experience as a team leader managing workgroups
  • Experience applying employment laws, regulations, and/or practices in relevant HR areas (i.e., FMLA, ADA, workers' compensation, employee relations, workplace investigations, etc.)
  • Proficiency with HRIS systems, data analysis tools to support informed decision‑making, and leading process improvements.
  • Work Authorization: Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship.
