This role offers an exciting opportunity to make a tangible impact on keeping our community safe and clean by maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing solid waste stationary equipment and facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and repair solid waste gas, water, pneumatic, mechanical, and hydraulic systems.
  • Perform complex maintenance and repair work independently or with assistance of assigned personnel.
  • Use steel welding and cutting techniques to fabricate and repair metal parts.
  • Perform general carpentry tasks to build and maintain structures, and plumbing work to repair broken pipes.
  • Troubleshoot, service and maintain basic hydraulic and mechanical systems on solid waste compaction units and other stationary equipment.
  • Operate heavy equipment such as backhoes, loaders and forklifts for maintenance and repair projects.
  • Support general grounds maintenance tasks, including mowing, edging, trimming, weeding, and shoveling; may operate chainsaw, edger, power mower, trimmer, etc.

Qualifications

  • One (1) year of experience operating a variety of equipment or hand/power tools in building maintenance or industrial mechanical work.
  • Six (6) months experience or familiarity with steel welding and cutting; use of an oxy‑acetylene torch is required (expert level not necessary).
  • Demonstrated ability to repair or replace plumbing fixtures, water valves and lines/pipes, and perform general carpentry tasks.
  • Must pass job‑related proficiency tests for general mechanical, carpentry, plumbing, and steel cutting and welding knowledge.
  • Valid Washington State Driver’s License.
  • Able to obtain a First Aid/CPR Card within 6 months of employment.
  • Employment conditioned on satisfactory results of a post‑offer drug screen, medical examination, and Physical Capacities Evaluation.

Work Schedule & Training

Monday–Thursday 3:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. After two (2) years, opportunity to promote to Solid Waste Maintenance Tech II following required training.

Selection Process

  1. Complete and submit an online application.
  2. Provide detailed responses to the four supplemental essay questions at the end of the application.
  3. Applicants who meet minimum qualifications advance to the next step of the screening process.
  4. A panel of subject‑matter experts reviews and scores responses. Top scoring candidates are invited to an in‑person operational proficiency test.
  5. The operational proficiency test assesses welding using Stick & MIG techniques, cutting steel with an oxy‑acetylene torch, soldering a copper pipe, and completing carpentry tasks.
  6. Following the proficiency test, top scoring candidates are invited to an in‑person interview session.
  7. A conditional job offer is extended contingent upon a post‑offer medical examination, Physical Abilities Test (PAT), and criminal background check.
