Summary

The VA Texas Valley Coastal Bend Health Care System is currently recruiting to fill a Staff Physician (Neurologist) position responsible for patient care, patient/family education, and participation in any indicated clinical research in the Neurology Service. Recruitment/Relocation Incentive

May be authorized for highly qualified individuals. This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP). Duties

The Staff Physician (Neurologist) provides comprehensive care for patients within the scope of neurology. The scope includes all phases of ambulatory care. Other responsibilities may include education of medical students and residents and/or supervision of other providers. The majority of the Staff Physician’s time is devoted to patient care and education, with the remaining time set aside for performance improvement activities, creative research to improve patient care, and maintaining proficiency in state‑of‑the‑art neurology care. Administrative Duties

Respond to and conduct assigned administrative duties to facilitate the performance of neurology services. Write medical orders and prescriptions for non‑controlled substances, as necessary, in accordance with federal and state law and supervision approval. Document care provided in the Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) per VA requirements. Document the detailed, targeted, initial history and physical examination required for evaluation in the electronic tool(s) required by VA. Obtain consent and document procedures performed for which the physician is responsible. Provide education and counseling of patients and families on preventive care, medical conditions, and prescribed treatments and drugs. Review and revise policies, scope of practice, and standards of operation to meet VA mandates. Review and guide protocols in chronic patient management, including coordination with prosthetics department to maintain fiscal responsibility. Clinical Duties

Respond to and complete consults received for the evaluation of neurology. Perform a comprehensive, detailed, targeted, initial history and physical examination in compliance with national guidelines. Order diagnostic studies such as laboratory tests, X-rays, EMG, EEG, and other tests. Consult with other disciplines as necessary to complete patient evaluation. Carry out health promotion and disease prevention activities, including education and shared decisionmaking. Competence in neurological procedures is desirable; documentation of procedures within the past 12 months will be requested. Participate in all VISN and national level efforts in neurological programs. Procedures: Autonomic Testing, Botulinum Toxin Injections, Electroencephalography Studies and Interpretation (EEG Video Monitoring), Evoked Potential Studies, Lumbar Puncture, Nerve Conduction Studies and EMG, Neurostimulators (Analysis‑Programming). May be authorized for highly qualified individuals. Education Debt Reduction Program (Student Loan Repayment)

Authorized. The position is eligible for the EDRP up to $200,000, with a maximum period of five years. Applicants must meet VHA policy requirements and submit an application within four months of appointment. Former EDRP participants are ineligible to apply. Pay

Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, and regular salary increases. Paid Time Off

TBD (typically Monday‑Friday, 0800‑1630 CST). Requirements

U.S. Citizenship; noncitizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens. All applicants must comply with VA drug‑screening policy. Selective Service registration required for males born after 12/31/1959. Proficiency in written and spoken English. Background/security investigation required. Completion of online onboarding process; acceptable identification required. Pass pre‑employment physical examination. Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program required. Moderate lifting (15‑44 pounds), moderate carrying, use of fingers, both hands and both legs required. Standing and walking 4‑8 hours. Near vision 13‑16 in., far vision 20/20–20/40. Depth perception and basic color discrimination required. Hearing aid permitted. Mental/emotional stability required. Qualifications

To qualify you must meet basic requirements and any additional ones listed. Current VA physicians under prior standards are deemed to have met the basic requirements. Basic Requirements

United States Citizenship (noncitizens only if no qualified citizens available). Language: Proficiency in spoken and written English. Education: MD or DO from an approved U.S. medical school (LCME or AOA accredited), or foreign graduate verified by ECFMG. License/Registration: Current, full, unrestricted medical license in the U.S. or DC. Residency Training: Completed residency in an ACGME or AOA accredited core specialty program. Board certification desired for faculty status. Acceptable residencies: (1) ACGME or (2) AOA approved, or (3) non‑U.S. residency followed by five years of verified U.S. practice deemed by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee. Residency

Currently enrolled residents in ACGME/AOA programs who meet basic requirements may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs). PRPs are licensed physicians and may be appointed intermittently or on a fee basis; they are not independent practitioners and are supervised. Education

MD or DO from an LCME‑accredited school (for MDs) or an AOA‑accredited school (for DOs). Foreign medical graduates must obtain ECFMG certification and have their medical school verified by the ECFMG. Additional Information
