Tuolumne County Community Development is seeking a Building Inspector to perform field inspections on residential, commercial, and related buildings and structures in one of the most beautiful counties in California. Tuolumne County is located in the beautiful Sierra Nevada foothills, approximately two hours east of the Bay Area. Residents enjoy a high quality of life, with access to Yosemite National Park, Stanislaus National Forest, and countless outdoor recreation opportunities including hiking, fishing, camping, skiing and wine country touring. We value our rural charm, historic preservation, and strong civic pride, while also seeking new opportunities for economic growth, housing, and public safety resilience. Building Inspector I:

This is the entry-level classification in the building inspection series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn and perform a variety of professional office and field work related to the inspection, application and enforcement of building codes. As experience is gained, assignments become more varied and are performed with greater independence. Positions at this level usually perform most of the duties required of the positions at the II level, but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods. Building Inspector II:

This is the journey-level classification in the series, able under direction to perform the full scope of duties required. Positions at this level are normally filled by advancement from the I level, or when filled from the outside, require prior inspection experience. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. This class is distinguished from Senior Building Inspector in that the latter is responsible for technical and functional supervision of lower-level staff and is capable of performing the most complex duties assigned to the division. Senior Building Inspector:

This is the advanced journey-level class in the Building Inspector series that performs the full range of duties related to participating in and conducting a variety of plan review and combination inspection activities. Responsibilities include reviewing plans, conducting inspections of residential, commercial, and industrial building sites, enforcing compliance with regulatory codes, laws, and ordinances, ensuring conformance with approved plans, specifications, standards, permits, and licensing, and providing technical and functional direction to lower level staff. This class is distinguished from Chief Building Official in that the latter has management responsibility for all plans examination, building inspections, permitting, code enforcement, and related programs, functions, and activities.
