Responsibilities
Use Gas‑Metal Arc, Flux‑Cored Arc, Gas‑Tungsten Arc, Submerged Arc, or Shielded Metal Arc welding processes.
Unite pipes from torch to tanks of oxygen and fuel gas and turn valves to release mixture.
Reach expected temperature, size, and color of flame by burning torch and adjusting flow of gas and air.
Preheat workpieces for the preparation of welding or curving, using torch.
Fill holes or correct mistakes in lead pieces and make bulges, thin and curves in metal workpieces.
Manually apply filler rod to supply weld metal; may clean or degrease weld joint or workplace, using wire brush, portable grinder, or chemical bath.
Remove excess weld, defective weld material, slag and spatter, using carbon arc gouge, hand scrapper, grinder or power chipper.
Climb up ladders or work on scaffolds to take apart textures.
Choose place of weld based on type, thickness, area, and expected temperature of metal to protect torch.
Other duties as assigned.
Physical Demands Employee regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. Frequently required to stand, walk, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear and taste or smell. Must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and may frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Requires close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Qualifications
Education: No minimum education requirements.
Experience: 2–4 years of Journeyman level experience.
Legal authorization: Must be legally authorized to work for any employer in the United States; no sponsorship.
