This position instructs high school athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success in their program. The employee must understand and abide by all building, Tacoma School District and Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) policies, regulations, procedures and guidelines.
Responsibilities
Supervise assistant coaches and student athletes to promote effective student learning through participation in athletic activities.
Plan, develop and implement an effective program for the particular sport to prepare athletes physically and mentally for competition; formulate behavioral objectives for the season; administer discipline fairly; emphasize safety; provide opportunities for all participants to achieve success; schedule preseason meetings with parents; inform participants of district policies and regulations.
Organize practice sessions that are stimulating and instructive, conducted on a regular daily basis; teach fundamental skills; prepare daily activities and keep records; promote good sportsmanship; adhere to district Coaches’ Handbook.
Coordinate facility use with the athletic director, budget and purchase equipment through ASB, manage injuries, submit injury records, and arrange transportation.
Inform students and parents of eligibility procedures and special rules for the sport; post and issue rules to participants.
Maintain equipment issued and records, ensure systematic return, clean and store equipment, perform weekly safety checks, hold students accountable for lost equipment, complete inventory lists.
Issue letters and awards per established regulations; make written recommendations to the athletic director regarding program, facilities, and transportation; assist in achieving school athletic program objectives.
Other Duties
Attend all district and building athletic meetings as called.
Update knowledge by attending clinics, workshops, and staying current with rule changes.
Perform related duties as assigned.
Conditions of Employment Work with students in outdoor fields, indoor and outdoor courts, gymnasium, swimming pool, or other sports facilities. Physical ability to lift and move sports equipment and demonstrate skills is required. May be exposed to infectious diseases and inclement weather.
Minimum Qualifications
High school graduation or equivalent.
Minimum of three years as an assistant coach.
At least 21 years of age (WIAA regulation).
First Aid Certificate, CPR card and AED training.
For swimming, diving or water polo coaches: Red Cross Safety Training or Lifeguard certification.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of building, Tacoma School District, and WIAA policies, regulations, and guidelines.
Knowledge of effective coaching practices for the sport.
Ability to comply with WIAA coaching standards.
Ability to motivate and fairly treat student athletes.
Ability to conduct oneself ethically and exemplarily at all times.
Ability to maintain poise and composure during practice and games.
Ability to relate to students with varying athletic abilities.
Ability to establish and maintain effective work and student relationships in a multicultural, diverse setting.
Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate athletic activities.
Ability to set up and maintain accurate records and files.
