BWXT is seeking a technically accomplished and strategically driven

Chief Technical Officer (CTO)

to lead our uranium enrichment business technical vision, research agenda, and execution of complex, cross‑agency government programs while developing successful commercial nuclear technologies. This role is central to the advancement of our capabilities in nuclear fuel cycle science, enrichment modeling, nonproliferation technologies, and classified R&D efforts.

Location On‑site in Oak Ridge, TN

Your Day to Day as the CTO – Uranium Enrichment

Set technical strategy for the company, aligning with national priorities in nuclear, enrichment science, and secure technology development.

Serve as Principal Investigator for major technical programs, including those related to centrifuge enrichment modeling, simulation infrastructure, and secure computing environments.

Lead integration across disciplines—chemical engineering, data science, nuclear process modeling, materials characterization, and classified systems engineering—to solve mission‑critical challenges.

Oversee a multi‑million‑dollar R&D portfolio.

Provide strategic business presentations with goal of successful commercial deployment.

Spearhead commercial nuclear, National Laboratory and inter‑agency collaborations (DOE‑SC, DOE‑NNSA, DOD, and intelligence community), ensuring shared resources, integrated goals, and sponsor alignment.

Direct strategic hiring, team growth, workforce development, and organizational alignment across mission sets, ensuring technical talent retention and cross‑functional collaboration.

Guide technology readiness and commercialization pathways for lab‑scale innovations, including in uranium enrichment, stable isotope supply chains, and analytical sensing systems.

Regularly brief Corporate Executives, sponsors, and inter‑agency working groups on technical performance, vision, and strategic roadmaps.

Required Qualifications

Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, or a closely related discipline.

15+ years of progressive technical leadership, including national lab or defense contractor experience.

Demonstrated leadership of complex, multi‑agency projects, including uranium enrichment, with budgets ranging from $300K to $200+M.

Experience managing programs in classified and unclassified environments with secure facility oversight.

Record of 50+ reports, multiple peer‑reviewed journal publications, and presentations to senior government leadership.

Proven ability to build and lead multi‑disciplinary technical teams, manage resources, and execute to sponsor goals.

Expertise in briefing senior stakeholders, including DOE/NNSA sponsors and inter‑agency working groups.

U.S. citizenship with no dual citizenship.

Active U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance level Q and/or TS/SCI clearance (or ability to reinstate/transfer).

Ability to maintain a government security clearance.

Ability to report to an assigned work location. This is not a remote opportunity.

Preferred Qualifications

Commercial uranium enrichment technology development and NRC Licensing.

Direct experience in managing and growing programs in support of DOE‑SC, DOE‑NNSA, or DTRA.

Successful track record in classified computing infrastructure planning and expansion.

Familiarity with Federal mission areas or comparable national lab R&D environments.

Experience with technology transition and commercialization of secure or emerging nuclear technologies.

Professional Engineering license (Tennessee), active or inactive.

Pay: $207,000- $271,000

The base salary range for this position in Tennessee (US‑TN) at the start of employment is expected to be between $207,000 and $271,000 per year. However, the base salary offered is based on local job market factors, and may vary further depending on factors specific to the selected job candidate, such as job‑related knowledge, skills, experience, and other objective business considerations. Subject to these considerations, the total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, such as an annual cash incentive in addition to a full range of medical, retirement, and/or other benefits. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided at such time the selected job candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, the selected job candidate will be employed 'at‑will,' unless employed at a location and in a position subject to a collective bargaining agreement. The company further reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment, compensation or benefit program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, company or individual department/team performance, and other market factors.
