Highly Specialist Clinical/Counselling Psychologist in Neuro-Rehabilitation Permanent, full-time, 37.5hrs

We are looking to appoint a highly motivated Clinical/Counselling Psychologist to our forward‑thinking multidisciplinary team which includes occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, physiotherapists, clinical neuropsychologists, rehab assistants, and nurses. This is a new, exciting position following investment and expansion of the team. You will work in a dynamic environment committed to multi‑disciplinary and multi‑agency collaboration, providing rehabilitation to adults with a broad range of neurological conditions. You will join a small, supportive group of psychologists in the Adult Community Physical Health Directorate, sharing a focus on improving outcomes for patients with long‑term conditions. The role offers regular collegial support, opportunities to work as a group, and access to CPD and training. The postholder will receive specialist neuropsychology supervision and has the opportunity to receive training in reflective practice, as staff support is a high priority for the directorate.

Main duties of the job

Provide specialist psychological and neuropsychological assessment and therapy, and advise and consult on clients’ psychological care to multidisciplinary and non‑psychologist colleagues as well as carers, working autonomously within professional guidelines and the team’s policies.

Utilise research skills for audit, policy and service development and research within the area served by the team/service.

Job responsibilities

Conduct specialist psychological assessments of Neuro‑rehabilitation Service clients and others referred to the team, integrating data from tests, self‑report measures, rating scales, structured observations and semi‑structured interviews with clients, families and other stakeholders.

Formulate and implement plans for formal psychological treatment and/or management of clients’ mental health problems, based on an appropriate conceptual framework and evidence‑based methods across all care settings.

Deliver a range of psychological interventions for individuals, carers, families and groups, employing multiple explanatory models and maintaining provisional hypotheses as needed.

Evaluate and make decisions about treatment options, considering theoretical and therapeutic models and complex factors that shape individuals, families or groups.

Exercise autonomous responsibility for the assessment, treatment and discharge of clients whose problems are managed by psychologically based standard care plans.

Provide specialist psychological advice, guidance and consultation to other professionals contributing directly to clients’ formulation, diagnosis and treatment plans.

Undertake risk assessment and risk management for individual clients and advise other professionals on psychological aspects of risk assessment and management.

Act as care coordinator when appropriate, initiating and reviewing care plans under the Consumer and Practitioner Agreement (CPA) with clients, carers and the wider care network.

Receive regular clinical professional supervision from a senior clinical psychologist and, where appropriate, other senior professional colleagues.

Acquire additional highly specialist experience and skills relevant to clinical psychology and/or the service, as agreed with the professional psychology manager.

Develop skills in postgraduate teaching, training and supervision, and provide supervision to other MDT staff’s psychological work as appropriate.

Provide professional and clinical supervision of trainee and assistant clinical psychologists.

Person Specification Education/Qualifications Essential

Doctoral level training in clinical or counselling psychology, including specifically models of neuropsychology, accredited by the BPS.

HPC registration.

Desirable

Pre‑qualification training and qualifications in research methodology, staff training and/or other fields of applied psychology.

Experience Essential

At least 18 months experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of clients with a wide variety of neurological deficits across the full range of care settings, including outpatient, community and inpatient.

Desirable

Experience of teaching, training and/or supervision.

Skills and Knowledge Essential

Skills in the use of complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management requiring sustained and intense concentration.

Desirable

Knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies in difficult‑to‑treat groups such as personality disorder, dual diagnoses, people with additional special needs, etc.

High level knowledge of the theory and practice of at least two specialised psychological therapies and group therapy.
