SQA & Sanitation Supervisor

is responsible for overseeing all food safety, quality, and sanitation operations during the night shift. This role leads and develops both FSQA Technicians and Sanitation Technicians, ensuring the facility meets or exceeds company, regulatory, and customer food safety and quality standards.

This position is accountable for the implementation and execution of FSQA programs, sanitation operations (including CIP, COP, and SIP systems), and pre-operational inspections. The FSQA & Sanitation Supervisor drives continuous improvement through data-driven performance management, root cause analysis, and proactive risk prevention.

Working closely with the FSQA Manager, Production, and Maintenance teams, this individual ensures that quality and sanitation programs are effectively executed to maintain SQF certification, regulatory compliance, and the company’s commitment to a strong food safety culture.

Responsibilities: Leadership & Team Development Manage and build a strong team of FSQA and Sanitation Technicians through coaching, mentoring, training, and performance evaluations.

Plan nightly sanitation and FSQA workloads, ensuring adequate coverage and timely task completion

Provide leadership presence on the floor; ensure compliance with GMPs, sanitation SOPs, and all safety requirements.

Foster teamwork and accountability within the sanitation staff through clear expectations, communication, and follow-up.

Sanitation & Operational Oversight

Oversee and validate all CIP, COP, and SIP operations, ensuring compliance with sanitation SOPs and chemical usage guidelines.

Ensure all cleaning, sanitizing, and verification activities are completed as scheduled and documented.

Conduct and document pre-operational inspections, ATP testing, and micro-swabbing to verify effectiveness of sanitation prior to production.

Manage re-cleaning, re-testing, and verification when pre-op or micro results fail to meet standards.

Ensure proper chemical handling, storage, PPE use, and compliance with OSHA safety standards.

Maintain organized, sanitary, and safe conditions across all areas of the facility.

Support environmental monitoring and assist in corrective actions for any out-of-spec results.

Food Safety & Quality Assurance

Oversee FSQA activities including raw material inspections, in-process and finished product testing, and environmental monitoring.

Ensure compliance with GMPs, HACCP, SQF, FDA, and customer standards.

Support calibration, performance verification, and documentation of analytical and microbiological testing equipment. Review and update food safety and quality programs, SOPs, and records as part of continuous improvement.

Participate in internal and external audits, customer visits, and regulatory inspections as a subject matter expert.

Assist in root cause investigations and implement corrective and preventive actions for non-conformances.

Compliance & Documentation Maintain accurate and complete records of sanitation activities, inspections, corrective actions, and verification results.

Support FSQA in maintaining compliance with SQF, FDA, and GFSI standards.

Participate in internal audits, external audits, and customer inspections as a sanitation subject matter expert.

Review and refine sanitation SOPs and master cleaning schedules as part of continuous improvement initiatives.

Performance Tracking & Reporting Develop and monitor sanitation KPIs, such as cleaning completion rates, pre-op pass/fail results, chemical usage efficiency, downtime, and staffing performance metrics.

Develop and monitor KPIs related to sanitation effectiveness, pre-op pass/fail rates, micro performance, chemical usage, downtime, and staffing efficiency.

Track FSQA metrics such as deviations, holds, rework, and customer complaints.

Analyze sanitation and quality data to identify trends, root causes, and opportunities for improvement.

Communicate sanitation and FSQA performance metrics weekly to management and operations teams

Safety & Continuous Improvement Ensure compliance with OSHA and company safety standards for chemical handling, confined spaces, and lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures.

Drive continuous improvement in sanitation effectiveness, labor efficiency, and chemical usage optimization.

Collaborate with FSQA and Operations to identify, test, and implement improved sanitation methods, equipment, or materials.

Support environmental monitoring programs and corrective action processes.

Cross-Functional Collaboration Work closely with FSQA and Production to ensure smooth start-up after sanitation, minimizing downtime and contamination risk.

Communicate effectively across departments regarding sanitation status, delays, or issues affecting production readiness.

Assist FSQA leadership in root cause investigations and corrective actions related to sanitation or microbiological non-conformances.

Duties/Responsibilities: Utilize assigned cleaning equipment, along with appropriate chemicals to CIP, COP, and SIP, all production equipment.

Perform intense, and thorough cleaning including washing walls, ceilings, floors, drains, pipes, and miscellaneous equipment used during the production run.

Foam, and wash outside of all machines, equipment, and tanks.

Stocks and maintains designated areas with supplies.

Remove trash/recycling, debris, and obstructions ensuring the cleanliness and safety of the Plant.

Diligently follow GMPs, all safety and health policies and regulations, as well as wearing proper PPE.

Conduct pre-operational swabbing of food contact and non-food contact surfaces to verify sanitation effectiveness.

Assist in root cause analysis and corrective actions for failed swab results, ensuring re-cleaning and re-testing as needed.

Maintain detailed records for compliance, audits, and continuous improvement efforts.

Creating and maintaining complete, accurate records of all testing performed.

Batching & Processing assistance

Maintain all documentation associated with sanitation.

Uphold SQF requirements including promotion of a strong & positive food safety culture

Active involvement in implementation, upkeep and continuous improvement of food safety as part of an interdisciplinary team

Required Skills/Abilities: Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.

Ability to lead and motivate diverse teams across shifts.

Knowledge of sanitation processes for aseptic, hot fill, or other food manufacturing systems.

Proficiency with sanitation chemicals, CIP/COP systems, and verification testing methods (ATP and Allergen swabbing, micro testing).

Strong organizational and documentation skills.

Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, SharePoint).

Understanding of SQF, HACCP, GMP, and FDA regulatory standards.

Familiarity with OSHA and chemical safety standards.

Excellent time management and the ability to adapt to shifting priorities.

Collaborative mindset with a commitment to promoting a strong food safety and sustainability culture.

Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Microbiology, or related field or minimum of 4 years experience in FSQA role.

3–5 years of experience in food manufacturing is preferred.

Strong knowledge of HACCP, GMP, SQF, and sanitation processes (CIP/COP/SIP).

Experience with aseptic or hot fill operations strongly preferred.

HACCP Certification required (or ability to obtain).

PCQI certification required.

SQF Practitioner or Sanitation Management certification preferred.

Physical Requirements: Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.

Ability to kneel, bend, and fit in difficult positions as required for equipment

Ability to lift at a maximum 30 lbs.

Ability to work in environment with varying temperatures (i.e. no climate control)
