Job Description Summary

Responsible for the efficient and effective collection of plasma from donors by performing venipuncture, monitoring the phlebotomy process and following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

Responsibilities

  1. In compliance with SOPs, performs all aspects of the phlebotomy procedure and plasma collection, including donor set‑up, monitoring and donor disconnect.
  2. In compliance with SOPs and FDA guidelines, performs venipuncture on donors to begin the phlebotomy process.
  3. Evaluates vein performance of the donor to identify possible problems; makes necessary corrections to expedite donation time and ensure product quality and donor safety. Ensures the donation process is efficient and makes adjustments as needed to give the donor a positive experience.
  4. May educate new donors on therapeutic products made from donated plasma. Explains screening process, health tests, appointment system, donation fees, center policies, proper nutrition and other pertinent information.
  5. Makes donor questions answered timely, accurately and professionally.
  6. Maintains alertness to any reaction by donors and assists with or notifies appropriate staff.
  7. Uses PDA to record incidents during the phlebotomy process such as machine alerts, volume variances and donor adverse events.
  8. Performs calibrations and verifies equipment maintenance as outlined in SOPs. Responds to and resolves complex equipment alarms or donor issues.
  9. Troubleshoots equipment failures, creates incident documentation, removes or replaces equipment from service.
  10. Monitors donor flow on the donor floor to assure continuous turnover and alerts Group Leader or Supervisor of donor flow issues.
  11. Collects arm or whole blood samples from donors for testing.
  12. Ensures accurate recording of donor data in the electronic donor information management system as outlined in SOPs.
  13. Understands policies and procedures of hyper‑immune programs at the center, if applicable.
  14. Maintains a clean, efficient work environment; ensures supplies and forms are available. Follows all HSE, OSHA policies and promotes safety in all actions.
  15. Maintains confidentiality of all personnel, donor and center information.
  16. May be cross‑trained in other areas to meet business needs.
  17. Provides bilingual assistance if required by the organization.
  18. Performs other job‑related duties as assigned.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Experience

Internal CSL employees/appliers must have successfully completed the CSL Plasma program. Phlebotomy training required. External candidates must have a minimum of 6 months experience as a phlebotomist (preferably one year). Minimum 12 months experience in a medical or health‑care environment preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Working Conditions (Physical & Mental Requirements)

  • Ability to complete routine forms or conduct routine oral communications.
  • Ability to understand, remember and apply oral and/or written instructions.
  • Must be able to see and speak with customers and observe equipment operation.
  • Occasionally perform tasks while standing and walking up to 100 % of the time.
  • Reach, bend, kneel and have high level of manual dexterity.
  • Occasionally required to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
  • Fast‑paced environment with frequent interruptions.
  • Frequently exposed to hazardous chemicals, extreme temperatures and blood‑borne pathogens.
  • Required to wear Personal Protective Equipment while performing specific tasks or in certain areas.
  • Required to work overtime and extended hours to support center operational needs.
  • Expected base pay range: $15.85–$18.25 per hour.
