Senior Director of Philanthropy
Department: University Development – NC State College of Design
Reporting to the Assistant Vice Chancellor for University Development and, on a dotted line, to the Dean of the College, the Senior Director of Philanthropy will lead major‑gift fundraising efforts for the College of Design and support broader university development initiatives.
Responsibilities
Grow the major gifts program by building a pipeline of 6‑figure and 7‑figure individual donors through identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship cycles.
Serve as a trusted partner to the Assistant Vice Chancellor and the Dean, collaborating on fundraising priorities and strategies aligned with college‑specific goals.
Craft persuasive oral and written cases for support tailored to assigned areas of the college.
Mentor and guide development staff on prospect strategy and solicitation techniques.
Assist the Dean with advisory board outreach and development efforts.
Represent the College at campus events and manage follow‑up with prospective donors.
Align donor interests with college and university priorities and coordinate stewardship with advancement colleagues.
Model a sophisticated, non‑territorial approach to donor‑centric philanthropy that encourages teamwork and responsiveness.
Staff committees, workgroups, and project teams as requested by University Development leadership.
Perform additional duties as assigned, including attending college and university events and traveling locally and out of state; occasional night and weekend work required.
Qualifications Minimum Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
Five (5) years or greater of progressive advancement experience.
Required Qualifications
Leadership experience with demonstrated managerial accomplishments.
Expert knowledge of fundraising principles, practices, and ethics.
Success in securing major gifts from individuals, foundations, and/or corporations.
Ability to translate institutional priorities into development opportunities.
Strong relationship‑building skills with key stakeholders and partners across the organization.
Commitment to a collegial, collaborative team culture.
Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail; ability to manage multiple priorities.
Excellent listening, oral, and written communication and interpersonal skills.
Computer literacy and competence with electronic donor information systems.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in higher‑education fundraising.
Required License
Valid driver’s license required for travel; NC driver’s license must be obtained within 60 days of hire and maintained.
